Coyotes cause state of emergency.
« on: May 12, 2004, 03:10:32 PM »
I was just watching UPN38 and they had a teaser for the Boston News station.  I guess one county in Mass. (Im guessing thats where since it is the Mass News station,) has called a state of emergency because the Coyotes (and they even showed video of them) are raiding into sububan areas and getting real aggressive.  From what I understand from other sources, this is a period they are real aggressive normaly due to the fact the females are birthing, and thus are looking for more food.  True?  Is there anything ethically wrong with hunting these critters right now?  Just curious cuz I was thinking of holding off hunting them again for a while.  If the concensus is its all right then maybe once turkey season ends Ill start after them again.

Great Idea

New Hampshire
The yote is an opportunist pure & simple. They have no trouble switching from house pets, to children if not discouraged.
The non-hunting public needs to yell and or throw objects at them every chance they get.

The coyotes in NW Arkansas have interbred w/ dogs and most are now coydogs.  They have the conformation of the yote but may have a white foot, black or reddish hair.   I have done my part to exterminate the hybrids but the houses have got awful  thick for comfortable shooting.  An old huntn an trapping buddy said he picked up 5 or 6 in snares this winter.
I suspect the cross dogs are more apt to become a nuisance.
Keep yer rifle handy.

Better check with local (Mass) Wildlife folks.  The closer you get to "civilization", there's more restrictions; that's why there's deer, geese, turkeys, and coyotes all over Mass (and Conn) suburbs ... right into the city.  Nobody can hunt anything in many towns and eastern counties, so wildlife ... even varmints ... run wild.  As noted, folks' pet cats & dogs are disappearing at a great rate.  However, in a "declared emergency" situation, there may be some relaxation of restrictions.  Check first; in Eastern Mass (particularly), unauthorized discharge of a firearm will get you in a heap o' trouble.

I watched the news this morning about the coyote problem. The town that is besieged by this issue is teh town of Hull. It is a suburb of the Greater Boston area and is located on the south shore of Boston Harbor. The coyotes have formed a den near a school and that is causeing consternation.

The reason Massachusetts has such a coyote problem is that in 1995 the state passed a referndum that outlawed leg-hold and conibear traps(except for beaver control by an ADC trapper who gets a permit from teh town hall for a specific problem) And the state has a season on coyotes( unlike other states where it is year round. The town of Hull is more than likely a town that prhibits teh discharge of firearms within its boundaries due to the human population. I am not sure if one could even use a bow. The towns around the Boston area are kind of funny when it comes to that stuff.

I guess this is one side effect that the animal rights ninnies didn't realize or acknowledge.

:cb2: Well, the other senator, Flip-Flop Kerry, sure ain't any better than Old Ted. Put them together with Twinkle-Toes Barney Frank and you've really got the symbol of the Democratic Party. A pack of immoral braying jackasses. If they fed every politician in the state to the coyotes it would solve two problems. It would help clean up the state and poison the coyotes at the same time. Then they can work on New York. :bye:

I know it doesn't sound Christian, but if God nuked Sodom and Gomorrah, Boston can't be far behind. It's hard to believe that the state that was home to the God seeking Puritans, now permits gay marriages, and the home to the Minutemen, now is a bastion for gun control.

Sorry. I get worked up every now and then. I feel better now.

Its like almost no place to stop and start. The state of kalifornia is in about the same fix. Where in the world did these people come from ?
It used to be that men had some b###s and would let it be known that they took no crap off of anybody but that was in the past i guess. Makes me want to puke when i see those fruit cakes hugging and kissing each other. Theres no doubt that they are going streight to hell when they die.
The bad part of this whole thing is it is effecting the whole country. We have turned into a bunch of whooses. OK now i feel better too. Take care Griz............................Joe...................................................................

:cb2: Sorry, I know this is a loooooog way from coyotes, BUT, A bill was introduced in the House this year that would allow Congress to override a Supreme Court decission with a 2/3 vote of both houses like they can now override a presidential veto. Now THAT is something to pray about. I'm sick and tired of this sick institution (the Supreme Court) making law instead of just punishing those who break the law. There is no real check or balance on their abuse of power. Judicial Review isn't even in the Constitution (Marbury v Madison, 1803). Let's hope Congress is as put out over some of these decissions as WE ARE.

Back to the Yote problem:  A few years ago on Elmendorf AFB a couple were taking an evening walk.  They had a toddler in a stroller and a three year old riding one of those Big Wheel trykes.  The three year old would ride ahead of Mom and Dad then turn around and ride back past them a ways then turn again.  After doing this several times the Parents heard the kid yelling on one of his passes to the rear.  They turned and saw a cayote dragging the kid into the woods.  The Dad ran back and grabbed a large stick to drive the cayote off.  The cayote dropped the kid and ran before Dad got close.  The kid suffered bites on his arm and shoulder.  So don't think cayotes are harmless, or that they won't go after kids.  Also all of man's attempts to erradicate them have been to no avail.  Man was able to get rid of the wolves and bears but not the cayote.  Cayotes are too adaptiable.  I've seen them in Washington DC, and now they have spread even up here north of the Alaska Range.  A friend got six of them last winter on the Chena river.  My advise to Boston, learn to live with them, since you won't let anyone shoot them.

It is a common held belife that the coyotes here in New Hampshire have wolf blood in em.  Biologists say that there is evidence of some wolf bloodlines in the population, and its believeable because of their size.  The dog I shot was the size of a medium German Shep.  ANY animal that size with teeth can do serious damage, and here in New England the coyote is not really liked....yet hardly hunted.  But Im working to fix that  :) .

A few years back the Feds released Red Wolves in The Land Between The Lakes, in Tennessee.  Now they have evidence that the local Cayotes are crossing with the Red Wolves.  In fact Johnny Stewart has a tape out of the Coywolf, which was made from one of those crosses.  The Red Wolf is a small animal, not much bigger than a Cayote.  I've seen some of the crosses, they look like a Red Cayote.  There is a deffinate reddish ting to their fur, while they have the ears and body of the cayote.  At least thats the discription of the two I saw on the shores of Barkley Lake last December.

It is NOT legal for Gays (fa$$) to marry in CA.  That moron mayor did it but they are not legal.  We passed a law specifically defining marriage as between a man and a woman, just a few years back.  Prosocuters are looking to file charges against that idiot mayor for abuse of his authority.  SOME of us in KA are still normal gun totin' Americans.

We shoot and have fun ...... but we also see some real crap floating around that needs to be cleaned up ... it bothers a good American to see it all go so weakly challenged and not challenged at all. The list is long ....

We'll just live our lives higher to counter it all.

OK - back to shooting straight !

:cb2: We had a coyote incident here in our county this week. A couple were out walking with their young son. They heard the boy cry out and saw a coyote trying to drag him off. He was a young kid, and kinda small for his age, but not a toddler by any means. The father ran at the coyote, yelling for all he was worth, and the coyote ran off. The boy suffered bite marks but not hurt seriously. He just looked mad.

I'm from NH and hunt Coyotes off seasons, you can hunt coyote year around, you just need a big game license. Last year shot 12 coyotes using either a rabbit in distress mouth call or electronic caller, a lot of fun and challenging, one of the coyotes weight was 48 pounds, now thats a big coyote, In southern NH you can only use rimfire, northern parts I use a Rem 700 243 win. When using the rimfire I head shoot them at close range, I also use a popup blind as well. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Hey RAMbo, dont forget the trusty 12ga shellshucker   .  I fing 12ga slugs will do quite well in taking down these critters.  Of course you can tell Im not a pelt hunter yet  :-D .  Seriously though, dont forget we can use handguns in the listed calibers.  I want to get a B-Square scope mount for my 6" GP 100.  Warm loaded .357s and a dot scope, IM hoping, will be a fun challlenge and a killer combo.  Im also getting ready to load up some 2 3/4" #4 buck loads for the 12ga.  I found a recipie using card wads and A fiber filler wad to get me 34 pellets out of a Winchester AA shell.  Of course if I were not so cheap I could just get me the 3" #4 Copper plated Federals   .

Just alittle info. on coyotes.
« Reply #22 on: June 11, 2004, 03:30:19 PM »
There are different sub- species of coyotes. Mostly what is East of the Mississippi river is the Eastern coyote which can very in color, but comonly has a redish cast to it. They do, but not very often, cross with dogs. The main reasons are 1. A dog will breed a female coyote if given the chance, but will then leave her, where a male coyote will bring her food to the den when the pups are small because the female will not leave the den. If the male does not bring her food she will kill her pups. If she has a sister that did not breed however the sister may bring her food and take the males place. This is where most coy-dogs come from. 2. It is very difficult for a male coyote to breed with a female dog because they are not able to breed year round like a dog, but only in the breeding season when the female coyotes are in heat. As for crossing with wolves, that would be even less likely because a wolf sees a coyote as compitation and will kill them every chance they get.
