Who says Florida deer are small?????
« on: May 15, 2004, 10:01:00 AM »
This is a Florida deer from a season ago. He weighed in at 225 pounds (live weight). I just thought I would share and let those that believe Florida deer are the size of dogs take a look.

Nice buck!  Does Florida have several sub-species of whitetail.  And the little guy has gotten all the attention.

:D Hey Steelhead,  How the heck did you get that live deer on a scales?  I chased one all the way across Texas trying to get em on the scales, finally had to shoot em.  It felt like he weighed more because it was dead weight.

Couldn't resist.............lol

Nice deer you got there congrats fellow hunter;) For the most part northern deer tend to be bigger than southern deer,I don't know where you draw the line, a few reasons they are, climate has allot to do with it, very hot climates, the deer don't need heavy winter coats or allot of bodyfat in those area's, so in tern they tend to be very lean, to shed heat from there body cores efficiently, unlike northern deer are the opposite they need thick heavy coats and high bodyfat to survive the harsh winters we have, as we near the winters the deer feed like a frenzy to gain weight for the winter to come, the bigger bodied deer can survive the below zero weather, there thick coats and winter bodyfat keep them alive during the harshest times. There are many more reasons but I believe this is one of the primary reasoning other than good feed. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Leon, Gadsden, Madison, Jackson and Calhoun counties all have some big deer in them.  The soil is very good in many parts of those counties and there is not as much dog running that goes on as opposed to the middle of the state and the Big Bend.  I have some property in Gadsden county and access to a large lease in Jackson.  Although that is a large deer, even for those counties, it's not an unheard of deer.  Congrats, he's a sweet one.

Steelhead,
Nice buck, I've heard of some big deer in FL but I guess the statewide average is pretty small especially if you factor in key deer.  Is that an airport behind you in the picture?
