BLR in 450?
« on: May 16, 2004, 04:41:59 PM »
Does anyone here have the BLR in 450? I have trouble operating my Marlin Lever action 45-70 because of a bad shoulder. I tried a Browning the other day and it worked pretty well. I saw one in 450 at a gun shop the tother day. I know it has p;enty of punch for Black Bear and as a backup when hunting in Grizzly country. Any info out there?
shot placement is everything.

Not excatly what you're looking for, but it does give you an impression of the rifles feel: http://www.gunblast.com/Browning-BLR358.htm  When the Browning BLR became available in 450 Marlin I thought this the perfect marriage of modern levergun, and modern levergun cartridge.  The 1895 Marlin, and 45/70 belong together IMHO.  I'd like to someday own both.

Thanks for the info. I have a BLR on layaway in 358 Winchester. I am looking forward to picking it up. I looked at the Browning in 450 at a Scheels all Sports store a few days ago. Because of the mechanical advantage, the BLR is easier to work the action than my Marlin. I have to switch hands to work the Marlin because of a very bad shoulder. I don't have any power  in it when it gets above straight out. Arthritis.

James B,

I have two .450 Marlins but neither are lever actions.  If I were to get a lever action .450 it would be the Browning BLR.  With it you can use any type of bullet you want from flat nose to pointed Barnes X bullets.  My brother in-law used my M70 .450 to take his Brown Bear two years ago this coming fall.  Did the job just fine.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

I know that you will love the BLR (I only have three), but I believe that fate has smiled on you by sending you the .358.  With the proper bullets, it should more than handle your bear problem(and deer and pests) as well or better than the .450.  I think you will find the .358 a good bit more versatile, with better range.  Also, you are not tied to a single supplier of brass.  If the store is out of shells, a handloader could make .358's out of range scrap 7-08's or 308's, but not so with a .450. I’m not a good person to compare one lever-action to the other. I only have one Marlin 44 and one Browning in 450 Marlin. The 450 has a pretty good punch to the shoulder. It’s a nice gun and handy. I haven’t put a scope on mine but I’m shooting 2.5” groups at 100 yards open sighted. I figure I would be half that with a scope. If you want power in a small package the BLR 450 should fit the bill. I do like this lever-action.

Be safe,
Scott

Yes they are. Along with millions of other items we use. Not to mention products from other countries as well. Oil, gas all of those other things tooooo. Hell, a large majority of American items are owned and produced by people against guns all together.

At least firearms made in other countries can be owned by Americans and used to support our constitutional right to own them.

What do we do, cut off our nose to spite our face?

What a pickle us Americans are in. The truth about it is it’s the American peoples fault for allowing the gvt to go this far.

I hope no one wears Levi’s or uses Chlorox bleech or even use Goggle for internet searches. All of them are anti gun tooo.

 :?

Be well,
Scott

Thanks for the replies. I have been off fishing for a few days. Not today though, cold and raining. The Walleye were biting until this front came in.
