Tom You've seen my tirades on the 7400 before, the clip is the same on the pump. In the case of the 7400 we had to file the catch on one clip to get the latch to fully engage. Cost the man a nice buck. He also used to try and cram one more round in, and that didn't help either.

I had two removable mags for my old 760 and I have never had a problem with them. They are 47 years old. I just clean the dust and gum rappers out. Mag #3 which I purchased a few years ago is a problem. Has Quality control failed. It is to large. I kept it on hand for a few years before opening the package. Then I found that I have a problem. I need to check it out and see if I can fix it. I have never had a mag retention problem with my 760. I did have a gum rapper cause a problem one time when I was a kid. I do a little better job now.... :grin:

It will not fit into the magzine well. Have to admit that with the two old ones working I just put it away to fix someday. The rifle functions great with the others. I suspect power manufacturing on #3.

I posted this under "More Info on 760" but thought I'd copy it over to this thread:

Bought a 760 in 30/06 back in 1980 when I lived in the Catskill Mtns of NY. Hunted with it for ten yrs and collected a deer a year with it for a stretch of about six years in a row. I'm a lefty and had a lefty safety added. Most groups ran 1 3/4" at 100 yds.
Only downside:
Had two magazines for it, kept one in my pocket as a spare and one in gun so I hunted with 8 rounds with me. One of the magazines was a bit tricky to get latched for some reason. One day I was hunting the mountains and a small black bear was headed my way. Shot at him as he was loping along and missed. He stopped and was staring at me, from about 40 yds away. I jacked another round in and held on his shoulder and....click. Pumped again and another click. Then realized magazine had fallen out of gun from recoil. Bear wised up by this time and took off. Got spare mag out of pocket and got one more round off as bear was headed out of town. Never touched him. Never got another chance at a NY bear.
Sold the gun when I moved to the midwest. No fault of the gun, just "graduated" to bolt actions.

Mag retention is a concern for any weapon that uses removeable ones. I carried a wheel gun on the job for years, along with an AR. Later was issued an autoloader to replace the wheelgun. One thing the training and field experience taught was to always make sure that your Mags function with your weapon. That included a rap on the base with the palm of the hand to make sure it was seated. I have seen a lot of problems with different brands over the years. The good part was that the problem was corrected on the Range, and not in the field. We return a bunch of after market mags that would not function properly.

Nothing like finding the mag drop out of your weapon at a critical time.

I have a Savage 110 with 3 mags and I have never had a problem with them. In fact the Savage sets a standard for smooth feeding from a rifle with removable mags.

I believe a rifle with removeable mags is safer and less likely to have an accident discharge in the loading/unloading process. In the last week or two I seen an article where somebody had duct taped a mag in place. If one must do that then they must, but it is a sign of poor manufacturing standards.

I also feel the need to purchase an extra mag or two incase the manufacture drops the removable mag option or goes out of business. People are always looking for replace mags for old .22 rifles.

Years ago somebody gave me a 10 round after market mag for the 760. I have never tried it. I carry my 760 with my hand on the balance point at the mag well. I would not know how to carry it with the extended mag. It looks like something the movie industry would love.

Had the mag drop out 2 or 3 times in my younger days. You learn a lot from these lessons. 2 problems I found, both mine. 1) as Ol TOM says above, listen for the click when inserting magazine, and always double check it. Those black clips are hard to find in the dark. 2) My '06 760 holds 5 rounds, although the mag will hold 5, it wont stay in the gun with a closed bolt and 5 in the clip, learned that the hard way too. I quickly became very familiar with every part of this rifle, it's my favorite and first choice of all I own, only cause it's my first rifle given to me by my dad 30 years ago. Probably a lot better choices today, but you don't get rid of an old reliable friend.
