Just got in my Star Modelo Super from Sarco
« on: May 20, 2004, 02:59:34 PM »
Well, nearly two weeks after mailing off my order, I have recieved my Star Modelo Super from Sarco, Inc. (strangely enough they mailed it USPS. I didn't think handguns could ship via USPA :\). Anyways, it's a pretty decent looking piece (I've always wanted a 1911 but haven't been able to save up the cash for one. This isn't the real thing, but it'll do for right now :)). The blueing is a little worn, but I guess that's expected on a gun this age. Grips are wooden. A little dark for my tastes, but they'll do for right now. I might get a set of rubber grips in the future though. Pics below.  Now I just need to get ahold of some 9mm Largo ammo (I haven't even had a chance to shoot the gun yet ).  Midway has the brass $11 or so per 100, so I'll likely just get 200 of those and go from there.

Hay MG - that's a pretty dang decent Star you got for yourself there.  The 9mm Largo is a real decent round to shoot, just shy of the 38 Super power levels.  I know that aluminum cased ammo is availble from CCI - got a box of it for my Destroyer Carbine and it's pretty OK, and that reloadable brass is available from Starline.

Since the Largo (meaning large or long) is just a 9mm case, you should be able to reload the brass using 9mm dies, and vice versa.  You can also shoot cast loads and my old Lyman manual lists loads for the 9mm and 38 Super cartridges with cast rn bullets up to 160 gn - decent plinking stuff.

BTW, if you ever feel the need to downsize, 9x19 (9mm Luger) barrels are available.  Also, you may wish to consider a set of new springs for it from Wolff.

I used to have lots of fun shooting the old Stars, Llamas and Astras in 9mm Largo - I hope ya'll have a blast.  Mikey.

I had though about that.  Quick question though:  FAC barrels for 9mm Luger are just listed for the Star Model A/B.  Do you happen to know if these would work for the Star Super as well? 9mm Largo does seem like a neat round, and I'd keep the original barrel around, but 9x19 is SOOO much more common and cheaper that between the two, I'd probably shoot it more if I had a 9mm Luger barrel for it.

Nice pistol, MG. I've got two Super B's, but they are both 9mm P. Your pictures are real good, but I can't quite read the caliber marking. Does it have 9mm L or what? BTW both of mine have extraction problems- hope your's doesn't. Enjoy it!  :D

1911wb:  It's 9mm Largo (the marking looks to be laser etched ino the chamber hood, so it's not that distinctive even if looking at it directly).

As to extraction problems, I've only put one mag through it so far, but it didn't have any problems with that (I bought 1 box of CCI Blazer's just to shoot it a few times.  At $17 per 50 they're too expensive from the local shop to shoot regularly.  I've got some Starline brass on the way for it though).

Thanks.  I'll have to keep that bookmarked.  For right now though, I'm going to try and just load my own.  Starline brass runs around $11 per 100, and I've got a good amount of .355" bullets sitting around (1700 IIRC).  I figure that those should keep me operational for a while :).

Ive been using a FAC barrel in mine for about 4 years. one of the best things Ive gotten for it.It took a little fitting to get it right but it works well now.ammo is a lot cheeper .The only problem Ive had is the chamber is a little tight. it will cycle any factory ammo but only select reloads.I resize the full length but some brands of cases still wont chamber.Federal cases seem the worst ofenders. They will chamber and fire in my s w just fine tho.Hope you enjoy yourse as much as I have mine.

Hey guys,
Just FYI we sell the 9mm Largo ammunition. It's more expensive then the surplus stuff, but it's more in the line of SD ammunition.
