Turtle trapping
« on: May 22, 2004, 10:42:46 AM »
Now that the turkey season has passed, it is now time to dig out the hoop net turtle trap and start looking for the dinosaurs in the Bay State.

One of the tricks to trapping turtles here is finding a source of water that isn't polluted. I was talking to a biologist who told me that one needs to be careful where you take snapping turtles. Since many of them eat aquatic plants, those plants may have leached pollution from days gone by.

Anyone else trap turtles? Just curious.

I also trap turtles.  I use Hoop traps .  I prefer the D shaped traps with 1 1/2 inch net that we (my brother and I make) and FRESH Carp for bait.
I understand you guys on the East Coast have some real Monster snappers out that way I know of some huge ones from Mane and New York.  You ever catch any real big ones (over 60 lbs 20+ inch shell length)??

I never got a really big one but at the fish and wildlife headquarters the state has the record snapper  caught. It weighed 79 pounds.

I'd also like to see a picture of your style trap too. I taught myself to tie net last winter thinking I might try making a couple turtle traps for myself. Thing is here in WI we have to have a 6 inch stretch on the mesh. I was thinking it might be easier to build a couple wire traps with 6 inch square wire???

Here in Fla. they're talking about limiting the catch on turtles. There is one fish house down around Lake Okeechobee that sold over 1,000# of turtle a week to overseas buyers for several weeks last year.

The POINT is Slimey that the fella is just noting information he knows, so what is your POINT...LOL..... GOTCHA!   For folks that dont know ol Newty  he lives with snappers and im talking about the four legged kind now.  Newt knows more about  chelydradia serpentina than some biologists i believe.   At least Slimey  can catch them in huge numbers and can clean one faster than some people skin  a muskrat.... by the way Slimey what are you doing on putter?   You should be  getting your turtle traps ready?????

Dang Newton, you off your meds? You seem to be a bit owly today. Never have gotten into trapping turtles, though they do get in the way of some of my beaver sets.
Have taken over 1,000 pounds of beaver in a day---and they sure smell better than those dang turtles. Wish they paid the same.

I got another net question.
A buddy has a dozen of the hoop turtle traps. They are in need of a re-dip in coating.
My question?
Is the oil based trap dips the same as the dip they use on the netting? When I look at what is on his traps now, it seems I could just use my cold dip and put his nets in?

Graybeard, Turtle traps work the best. Bait them with FRESH fish.Set the traps near vegataion.Up stream,so your bait slick goes into the vegataion down stream or across the pond.
Or Jug them. Use a #3/0 or #4/0 hook on 6' of masnary line. No steel leader neaded.Tie it to a gallon jug. Bait with eel or catfish. Throw the set where you see turtles or up stream of vegatation.

The milk jug with a hook attached is illegal in some states if I remember right. The traps Ive seen here in Michigan didnt look quite like his.  We used to just net them some times next to our minnow traps.

The kind my pals use up here you can view at growersupply.com or bugspray.com  Set the bait  just the door which flops shut on them after they are in the trap. You can use these up just on the shore where the water meets the land or just set into the water just off shore
