Help w/ Security Six
« on: May 22, 2004, 03:51:45 PM »
My well used Security Six is hard to cock in single action and next to impossible to shoot double action on ONE chamber.  I can advance the cylinder past this and shoot 5 with no problem.  I've torn it down and can find no reason for it to be binding on one chamber.

Any ideas?  My next move is to send it to Ruger for fixin'.

Since no one responded, guess Ill take a crack at it. Im guessing this is a receny problem. I would look at the ratchet or  ejector star for a bent or dented tooth or a burr of some sort. Or the one chamber has fouling  preventing the cartridge from seating fully and its binding on the recoil plate. Tough to figure out log distance.
Let us know what you find out.

Yes, it is a recent problem.  The ejector star specifically the bumps that the advance hand works against looks like the others.  No noticable damage, wear or yuchies (that a technical term taught to me by my wife.)

I tore everything down short of removing the advance finger, transfer bar, cylinder release latch and firing pin mechanism.  Everything looks fine.  The chamber is clean and the fired cases slip in and out of every chamber.  Nothing is binding on, in, behind or in front of the cylinder.  I assembled everything and nothing changed.

This is why I am puzzled.  The cylinder spins freely when opened.  Rotates by hand when closed and the latch is defeated.  That means the advancing finger has a glitch???  But then why only on one chamber?  I would expect it to do this on all chambers.

More information - any specific questions? - thanks for the thoughts!

You didn't mention if the cylinder rotated when it was empty. It seems like i had a simuler problem in the past but can't remember what the cause was. Have you checked your cylinder pin to make sure its not bent a little? Can you rotate the cylinder when emty ? These may be silly ideas
but i can't think of any reason for it do this. Hope you can figger it out.
Good luck and let us know what you find...............Joe.......................

Ruger Repairs
« Reply #4 on: July 09, 2004, 02:31:19 AM »
I would recommend that you return your Security Six to the factory for repair.  They still have parts for and can service this model.  If you have not modified parts or messed with it internally yourself and done further damage, they may not charge you for the repairs other than for return shipping.  If you are the legal owner of the revolver you may return it to the factory for repairs yourself without having to ship it through a dealer.
I would ship it UPS next day air with an AOD label.

It would probably be a good idea to check Ruger's web site for specific instructions, as I don't know whether they still service the Security Six at the Newport, NH facility where I used to work, or if all customer service is handled out of the Prescott, AZ plant these days.  I'm a but out of touch since I left the copmpany in 1987.
