I just still hunt where I find the most sign, just ease along always looking and going slow. I have some favorite places where if the weather is right, I know I will find them there if I ease in their quiet enough. I really dont try to follow tracks unless it is smoking hot sign like in or just after a rain when I know they are moving.

stalking hogs without dogs there are a couple of basic principles.

1. Use the wind - ie stay downwind
2. Keep noise to a minimum. (Loading a round in the chamber can spook them so you might have to stalk with one ready to go)
3. Movement slow
4. Become tuned to your environment (i do this by stalking at least 1km away from where i expect the little buggers to be).

These aside, if your starting out and new to it all, heres what I recommend downunder (keeping in mind the info above) dunno if it will work in the US - do you have long grass there ?

If there is a grassy areas, what i do is get my quad and make a few tracks in the long grass on areas along waterways where i expect pigs to travel. I do this the week before my stalk. I also use the trip to have a look to see if the pigs are in the area, fresh wallows, sign etc.

I then come back a week later park the quad at least 1km away (to prevent noise and tune myself with the environment) then I walk my quad tracks. Pigs will start to use these tracks and if you make your track plan go between water ways, you'll be able to find them dropping turds on the quad track and you will find them. Also walking in long grass that has been trampled by the quad will be easier and quieter for you.

When your staring out, this technique really works - especially if you haven't got dogs. Having a quad also helps :)

or you can burn the grass - we have wild bushfires that do a good job of this
