Back from the range
« on: May 23, 2004, 11:07:14 AM »
Well i finally got out to the range with my new sportster 22lr.
I put about 100 rounds thru it and it was starting to come in before getting rained out.
best groups came with winchester power-point 40gr hollow point
5 shot groups well under 1inch at 50
cci mini mag solid point grouped almost the same.
next best was cci stinger, then win wildcat
none of the remington grouped well at all.

not great results i know but im still shooting in the barrel and trying different brands of ammo.

Sounds good, except for the rain.  Keep us posted on how it does the next time out.  What scope do you have on it?

Hey Scruffy
my scope on this one is a nikon prostaff 4x fixed rimfire
the optics on it are really clear and has a fine crosshair
probably not the best range scope w/4x only but should make a good small game scope.

the trigger pull is a little heavy....thinking about doing a trigger job on it.

do you think that there is any real advantage to floating the barrel on these rimfires?......it really did help with my 30-06.

again thanks for your help!!

I used to say no, but shooting off a harris bipod with the hot 22 mag loads it did make a difference.  I cut a small piece of ruber hose that fits between the barrel lug and the forend that spaces the forend down 1/8" or so, maybe a little more.  Now any torque put on the barrel from the bipod is negated as much as possible.  The rubber absorbs or cushions the torque instead of twisting the forend which would act on both the barrel and the reciever.

It shrunk the groups on the 22mag a bit.  I did it to the 22lr without making a baseline.  Shooting off bags, I don't know.  And maybe it was something else that improved the groups, who knows, but theoretically it can't hurt.

And, the all important looks, I think it looks better.  The gap between the forend and barrel is consistant down the sides and under the barrel.  The centerline of the bore and the top of the forend are also parralel, so the rifle has more symetrical lines.  I'm a sucker for a nice looking rifle....
