Wal unlike a certain fellow frum Kalifornia what say he killz a dear er wuz dat a deer? but ain't got no pichure uv it I gotz a picture uv mine.  :-D

Today was the second morning of gun season. Yesterday a fellow cut off a big 10 point that was heading my way and now it is headed for his wall instead of mine. I saw a pair of deer but they were in brush beyond the end of my longest shooting lane so no shot.

Went back today to same stand. Had the LW .243 yesterday but it took a semi hard fall so left it home today until I can get up on the range to double check the zero of it. Think it will be OK but want to be sure. Took the R700 LSS Mtn. Rifle in 7-08 today. It is a product test rifle that had not yet been bloodied and so that changed today. Using Hornady Light Magnum 139 SP product test ammo and wearing a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7 product test scope this was a real product test hunt.  :)

Anyway without further ado he is what happened today.



Yes that's legal in Bama. Can shoot two does or a buck and a doe, well ya could if ya could see a buck that is. Iffen the fellow down the way would let them come to me.  :)

Did say I shot them wid no .24 and 3. Sed I shot dem wid a 7 and 08 using Hornady Light Magnum ammo. And yeah it do make holes dat big when it comes out.

BTW even with that huge gaping hole in the off side and the near side shoulder broken that mama doe still ran 35 yards or so before piling up. The younger doe piled up at the shot and never moved.  :eek:

Now iffen I hadn't dropped the LW .243 yesterday (twice no less) I might have had it with me today. Don't think it hit hard enough to matter either time but until I shoot it again on paper it don't go back to the woods just in case. No I really wasn't having a good day yesterday. First time I nearly dropped the sucker outta the treestand but managed to catch it just in time and the second time when I got to base of tree and propped it against the tree at base of ladder the dang thing just slid rat off and flopped on ground after bouncing off the ladder. Oh well stuff happens don't ya know.  :)

I guess today was the day. I got a nice crotch horn 140 pounds this morning. That makes my 3rd this season since November 1st.  2 nice does and him. I shot all of them with my 25-06 single shot nef ultra. 3 shots,  3 deer. I now have one week left to fill my father in laws doe permit then w eek of late muzzleloading. Yes that is legal here in NY stste tag consignment neew this year. A doe permit can be signed over to someone else to fill. No pics here, but I will get some tomorrow.

Oh yeah the longest runner was today he ran 20 yards with a hole through both lungs and his heart. Snow here now, so he painted it well. The 2 does never stepped out of the tracks they were in when I pulled the triger. One was 100 pounds the other 154. Thinking about buying another freezer if my luck keeps up. 2 weeks to go three tags to fill.  :lol:

It is much easier to harvest with a single shot when the deer are very close. I attribute that to Ol Tom's nosecamo. When you shoot them at 20 feet much nicer than 100 yards.

Great goin', GB. Looks like there'll be some good eatin' this winter!

Had a great opening weekend. Went to the lake house (it doubles as a hunting lodge in the winter since its 5 minutes from my lease) Friday night and came home last night. Saw a bunch of deer both days. Gave one a haircut Saturday afternoon but could find no evidence of hitting meat. Got a good report on the Iron Bowl as I was coming out of the woods after dark. Got up the next morning and looked once more to see if I'd hit the deer the day before. Went stalking in mid morning and watched a nice buck stretch, take a dump, and then nibble on stuff for about 20-25 minutes. Trouble was, he was on the next guy's property about 75 yards. At one time he walked toward me about 10 yards, but eventually eased off into the brush. This all was on the power line easement out in plain open view. I could have killed him at any time, but just didn't want to do it illegally. Just the rush of watching him felt good. It is great getting back hunting after missing last year. Finally neck shot (with my 7mmX08, GB) a nice meat doe yesterday afternoon. Got home last night and watched the tape of the Iron Bowl. Great weekend!!!!!! War Eagle!

Pres, did you try to call him closer to you with a grunt call? I've used this many times to take deer I wouldn't otherwise have been able to take. In a situation like you had it can mean a deer rather than just a memory. The one I have that works often is an old wooden bodied one made by Primos. I've lost count of the deer it has brought my way that weren't gonna come to me to include the nice 11 point with drop tine I have on the wall.

I remember you mentioning the lake house back when we first started to correspond and you invited me to come down and hunt with you. Never did make it did I?  :oops:

I never go to the woods without my grunt tube.

Just one of those situations where I got caught without the tools I needed. Didn't even have my binoculars. I was carrying the Marlin 45-70 with a 2.5X scope and that's all I had to look him over with. Would've loved to have had a grunt call or even a doe bleat call.  
Yea, the lake house is still my huntin'camp and the offer still stands if you want to try out Tallapoosa County. I'll be there most every weekend trying to make up for all the lost time from last year. Be glad to have you down. I'll try to make sure I don't have my #1 Ruger 45-70 around if'n you come down. I know you'll try to take it away from me if I do!

Y'all down there have all the luck. Here in sunny California they only allow deer huntin' when the temperature is hoverin' around the century mark. The last regular rifle season ended 3 November. I was still able to bag a little forkhorn(what you guys call a 4pt)that field dressed at a little over 140 lbs. Knocked him down at around 85 yds using my trusty .33 Winchester. Man, I sure would love to bag a nice Whitetail. Ain't none 'round heah, yet. They're workin' their way this direction, though. I remember seein' monster bucks back in the day, when I spent some time at Ft. Campbell. Never could get around to huntin' em, though. I'll prob'ly have to go on up to Oregon or Montana to find one these days. Heck, might jus' drag the old 45-90 along and pick up a nice big Elk while I'm at it. You 'ol boys enjoy y'er huntin' in the rut. That sorta thing ain't gonna happen out this way.

way down there I live in Northern NY on the canadian border it is snowing as I type this. cant wait short work week will be off thursday friday saturday and sunday. The deer will die. Last day of rifle here is this Sunday 12/01.  Then a week of late muzzleloading. I still have 2 muzzleloading tags and a doe tag to fill.

Pres, maybe we can arrange a weekend this season for me to get down and join you. Would like to meet you and am sure would enjoy "roughing it" in your deer camp.  :)

I'll promise to be nice and not try to take your Ruggggeeerrr gun from you iffen ya wanna hunt with it.  :-D

Bandit, I'm down Sackamenna way. Spent a year in Yooreeka back in the mid '70s. Them 1886s are just about the best levergun ever turned out. 45-90s are around, but a decent shooter can set 'ya back a couple grand or more. I have one of the later(1918) ones with nickle steel barrel for smokeless powder. The darned thing only weighs a little over 7 lbs, so recoil can hurt, especially with full house handloads. Saw a new(in box)Browning 71 over at the Reno show yesterday. Marked $500. I probably should've grabbed it, but I'd already bought a '93 Marlin 38-55. It ough'ta be a great little shooter. Twenty in. bbl and marked Special Smokeless Steel. This is my first Marlin levergun. It should be a blacktail buster.

Sounds great, GB. Hope it works out. I'd be glad to host you for a little deer huntin' and it'll give me a chance to get some good directions and equipment needs for the next Annual Hoo-Haw over in MS. I don't have no throwin' hawk or knife, so I might need some advice.
