good shooting guys.everyone did a great job.

a big thanks to Wlscott for scoring the cards. :toast:

i shot a lot of rounds through my new 17 to get that group.i shot 4 boxes of ammo at around $10.00 per box.sometimes those groups dont come cheap.the 17 is a real shooter.i never was to impressed with the new 17s untill my friend bought one and i  shot it at the range one day.after that i had to have one.they are a good crow gun too

the 30-30 came in for me after some time at the range.this rifle seems to like the long jump to the lands unlike my 223.

all these groups were shot very slow.i took my muzzle loader to the range when i shot most of these groups.i would shoot a shot through a handi rifle then i would set that rifle aside.then i would shoot my muzz a couple times.then i would shoot the handi again.you dont want the handi rifle barrels to get hot.when they get hot groups open up.this is the case when it come to my rifles anyway.you can shoot the 17 alittle more, that doesnt seem to heat up very fast.

I like Fred M's idea about the varmint class, but I would want to keep the other categories as they are. Showing the accuracy of all these firearms is a tribute to these inexpensive H&R / NEF single shots.

Wlscott,

What was the range these pistol calibers were shot at?  I've been shooting mine at 100 yards, but I need to know what everyone has been shooting if I'm going to do some meaningful practice for next time.

50 yards.

Not sure how that was chosen, but it is not unreasonable as most of these pistol cartridge chambered rifles are mosty purchased for short range offhand plinking and short range deer hunting. It also seems to be in keeping with the accuracy potential of Handi's so chambered.

While there might be an allure to using the more commonly accepted benchrest standards, I do not think  the Handi a bench rest rifle, nor even benchrest quality. The Handi is a plinker/ hunter, and at it's best will not be close to competitive to true competition oriented rifles. I think it would be a disservice to newer people on the board and those who have been around a while and are considering shooting in the next match to change the catagories and the expectations, real or imagined, concerning what this match is primarily about......a friendly exchange amoung friends not a competition in the common sense. If anyone chooses to take Jeff on, it is their choice, but certainly not the point of the NEF Postal Match.

The majority of us are plinkers at heart, most of us got these rifles to play with, and while we will fret and pull both hair and bullets, spend hours meditating on how to shave another tenth of an inch off the group or even simply get 5 of 5 into a single group, come hunting season, we will load up a batch of our best loads and head into the woods. Those of us not hunters, seem to hunker down at other projects, sticking their heads out once in a while as a warm winter day threatens to allow a few hours of shooting pleasure.

Besides, why fix whats not broke????

My idea of a ten minute time limit, after thinking about it, is not a good one for a Handi. I think I would go for a no time limit. Fire all your shots from a cold barrel on day apart if you wish, that is the way you hunt with a single shot. Clean in between and fire a fouling shot before the next record shot.

The 50 yard range for the pistol cartridges sounds fair too. All others should be at 100 yards any sights. Fred M.

That's exactly why.  Typically, pistol calibers won't be quite as accurate at longer ranges.  They are mostly used as short range, thick cover guns.  Since they are in their own category, it didn't hurt anything to shorten the range to 50 yards.

The more that I think about it, the more I think we should just leave the Postal Match like it is.  It's just a friendly, informal match amoung friends.  I like the fact that there aren't many rules.  You can shoot from a bench, sticks, bipod or even the hood of your pickup or seat of your four wheeler.  I was the one that sugested it, but I think we should leave it the way it is.

W L Scott I tee totaly agree with you on the last post of yours,
Leave it alone. If it ain't broke don't try to fix it.
It's just a friendly get to gather to show what these little rifles
can do. Don't need a lot of rules,  Marv.

Thanks for the info!

Now all I need is one of those 32X scopes so I can shoot at fly specks at 50 yards.

I just got a fresh batch of 250 gr cast gas checks to shoot in the .357!

Jeff,

Here's a 1.87" 100 yard group I shot today with 10.0 gr Lil'Gun, .357 brass, CCI 400, 250 gr LGC Beartooth and no crimp (seated in the crimping groove).

The pistol calibers can shoot pretty good at times!

Forgot to say I'm only using a Bushnell 3-9X and the barrel is on a shotgun frame and forearm.

There is one change that might make sense.  Having the 17hmr moved from 50 yards to 100 yards.  It's obvious that the hummer is accurate and not a 50 yard target round like the 22lr.  Moving the 17hmr to 100 would probably get more cards for it also.  There was alot of comments on the rimfire board that shooting the 17hmr at 50 yards seemed like cheating so they didn't do it.

Regardless of 50 or 100 I hope to see more cards for the 17hmr next time.  I'm thinking I'm going to have to break down and buy one to...

50 or 100 yds it doesnt matter to me one way or another.the 17s are great shooters and i think they would make a good rifle for anyone wanting a light varmint rifle

I don't mind shooting against the .17 HMR at 50 and some of us only have 50 yard ranges. I don't figger it was the cartridge that beat me; it was Jeff, and I'm used to that.
