260 barrel??
« on: May 24, 2004, 04:21:25 PM »
I ask this on the rifle site as well. Has anyone tried the 260 barrel on the Encore? I am looking for a good deer hunting barrel. Most of my shots on deer are mule deer at about 200 yards. I am thinking of something from the 250 Savage to the 7mm-08. I have used the 35 Remington barrel with good results for bigger game. Where do most of you get your barrels? Is Fox Ridge a fair place to buy them? The only barrel they seem to have around here in the gun stores is the 223 and 22-250. I am not into varmit hunting to much. From deer to Moose is more my thing. Thanks. I have been into contenders for quite a while but am just getting my first Encore.
shot placement is everything.

James,
The 260 will do quite fine for what you want!  Try Natchez Shooters or some of the mail order companies.

yep, it'd be hard to beat the 260 or 7-08. ya can still get the 7-08 new as factory....but maybe you can find what ya need used for a good price. :D

try ed's contenders. he may have what ya need. banner ad here on site...i believe.

TC does not list a factory .260, whereas Foxridge does. And I'm sure, most the other custom shops can do it also. FR would be the least expensive, in the custom route, I think. I also agree, either the .260 or 7-08 would be fine deer round.

The 260 has not been treated well buy any of the gun makers. Remington started out offering it in the 700 BLD with a 24 inch barrel. Great Idea and great gun. They then dropped it into the light rifle class and shortened it up to about 20 inches. I have a Ruger All Weather in 260 with a 22 inch barrel but it leaves velocity lacking. I want to trade in the Ruger and replace that caliber in my line-up with a 24 or 26 inch barrel. I am about to trade several rifles off and just do most of my hunting with the Encore. The new one I bought came with a 24 inch 45-70 barrel. Thats all I have so far. I like the 260, 7mm-08 and the 280 Rem. about the best for Mule deer hunting.
