What state are you located in?  It sounds to me like you could use a mentor or companion who is local to you and been there with those questions.

You might try this link to post something in your state regional forum.  Here in Arizona you would probably come up with a lot of folks who would give you a hand in person or point you to the right local resource.

Good luck and keep the interest.

Buckslayer, it would be hard to find a new compound bow these days that will not shoot well.  The kits by well known manufacturers are good beginner setups.  The real key though is proper bow setup.  I would look for an archery club or check with anyone you know who hunts.  Someone will know a bowhunter somewhere close to you that can help you with getting setup right and started with a bow/arrow setup that fits you.  I do not know how much you know about archery etc... but learning on your own is possible if you read a lot and maybe order a video or 2 on bow setup and shooting.

There is a pro shop in Chesapeake that I have dealt with and they could help. They also have a range there as well. There may be a couple of places in Norfolk I haven't looked into.
There is a Bass Pro Shop in Hampton, but I do not know how knowledgeable there staff is. There is a shop in Newport News. It may be worth your while to pay the toll on the Bay Bridge Tunnel and get some expericed to help you get set up and tuned.
You may find someone on your side of the bay who works out of there home. You would be surprised at how knowledgable some of these people may be. Also go to the web sites of the bow manufactures most of them have a search for dealers.  You may be surprised and find someone in your area.
Good luck,
Stan
