I've personally seen two cougars in the last ten years.  A study by the National Wildlife Federation in conjunction with  Michigan State University concluded from a study that a number of cougars live in the U. P. and the Northern lower peninsulaat and at least eight cougars live at Seul Choix Point which is about ten miles from where I live.  Reputable people report seeing them all the time.   Ace

Fella told me about a cougar killed by a car in Amberg Wi which is just below Michigan border near Menominee.   Could have been  one of those MICHIGAN cougars

Been a few stories and sightings here in Southeastern Nebraska going around, too.
Within last few years, had one hit by a car just across the river over in Iowa (Hamburg), and then one was darted/captured just off the 680 interchange near heart of Omaha.
Local police in Paul, NE (just north of Grand Island) shot a big male near the grade school.
I had heard the stories for years while I was growing up, and I've always wanted to find a track or see one while running sets...but never have myself. I used to brush them off as just stories, too. And, depending upon the source, perhaps many of them were just that.
But, with the confirmed kills, incidents, and captures in recent years in this part of the state...where recorded confirmed evidence hadn't existed for nearly a century, well...anything is possible now.
Seeing other "odd" and "out-of-place" wildlife showing up, too. Armadillos are certainly not native to our state, but the last few dry, warm spells put them in peoples lawns in the South-Central part of the state.
Good luck with your cats!

Two were seen by a man I consider to be a reliable source just west of Pearl Lake while he and his son were mushrooming. By the time they could get a DNR officer out there to look at the tracks left in the road the rain washed them out so it's considered another unsubstantiated sighting.

John's wood stove isn't his problem I don't believe. About 20 years ago somebody spotted Bigfoot around there; I think it was John  He used to have a lot of fun!

Dave,

There's lots of loose stoves on that road it seems. lol

Skidway,

Some things just never change.  8)  Supprised he hasn't seen the Lake Anne bessy yet. lol

While the cougar sighting isn't the hardest thing to beleive, I'm still waiting for a track, a picture, one waiting in my trap......you know, something solid. I can't dispute what I don't see for myself, but just can't back it yet either. Kind of brought up with the don't beleive anything you here, and only half what you see mentality.

Mallard:
There are plenty of pictures and plenty of tracks as evidence.  The "Buck Levasseur Outdoor TV Show" showed video footage of a cougar crouched in a back yard in the U.P. and then slinking off, one crossing the road, etc.  As reported by the NTA, the national Wildlife federation along with MSU did research on cougars, getting DNA done on scat found in the U. P. and Northern Lower which proved to be 100% cougar scat, some animals weighing up to 200 lbs they say.  As for tracks, I saw tracks as far back as 49 years ago.  There was a report in the U.P. in 1955 of a cougar crossing the road leaving tracks in the snow.  My Dad said "I have to see this to believe it so we drove as fast as we could to the area and sure enough there were genuine cougar tracks.  The research mentioned above also stated there is no mystery about where they originated from, that they are simply remnants of cougars that were here 100 years ago and there numbers are now expanding enough again to note plenty of sightings. Proof of this they say is the fact that so many color phases are reported from light tan to pure black.  These off colors like black and gray are the result they say of interbreeding amongst families.  The video of the backyard cougar was a dark gray cougar which was shown to a zoologist who stated the identical thing, the result of a come-back by years of inter-breeding.

Not doubting it for a moment Asa, especially in the UP and the northern tip of the lower. My comments are directed towards the local sighting(s) in my parts, and more specificaly an area that is part of my trap line.

With all the hauntings, alien landings, and cougars sightings in the area, I'm kind of supprised you have any line left at all. LOL. I'm not one to sit in the bushes and play hymnals on my predator caller while you run the night checks, but man you sure can run for fast for a big fella.    LOL. Still can't explain the rose pedals and wood crosses  ........Hmmmm. You do have an odd following that's for sure.  8)

I bet that as summer approaches, and the internal temps on his truck rise when he parks it with the windows closed...it must get "intense" in that cab too.
