:D Shep. The guns sold by the Hudson Bay company are known as Northwest Trade Guns, usually .54-.66 cal. smooth bores. Do a google search and it's possible you will spend the next 5 years reading up on these, but I suggest you go right out and buy one and start shooting it. Then you can post questions about loads and such, and lots of folks will jump in, and some of us might even be able to help. :)

Shep,

I want to welcome you to GBO (Greybeard Outdoors) and wish that you benefit from the advice received.  While there might be differences in how to get there, most everybody is generally headed in the same direction.

Thanks for the info on this gun.
I do not have to go out and buy one. I had one given to me many years ago. It is an original old one.
It is approx. .57 cal. smoothbore. On the underside of the barrel there is the following - N      9184     Y   a crown over BP   26   a crown over BV
then a crudly stamped V11. On the flat (first 8" of barrel is octagon) above the bottem one is a   4 but about three inches from it is  A.1
The breech block also has the crude V11, the crown overBV and the  4
The lock has two flying geese and the words HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY.
In my opinion , it is not in good enough shape to shoot although it does function.
Do you know what all the marks mean?

Shep, I believe the crown marks are British proof marks, the 26 is gauge, or balls to the pound. I don't know about the others, but then I'm far from an expert. Sounds like you might have a fairly valuable piece. The survival rate on these guns was not good, most saw hard use and were dicarded when they broke.
