recheckering
« on: May 30, 2004, 07:59:43 AM »
Anyone have a recomendation for who to rechecker a stock?
My Savage 99 is in need of a facelift. It has the pressed checkering, I bought a Dem Bart set to re cut it, did a line or two and figgered out I am not a checkerer. If there are any out there that wont break the bank, I'd appreciate info.
   Thanks,

There are 2 kinds of pressed checkering, positive and negative image.  The negative image is probably the most common and the diamonds that make up the checkering are just diamond shaped holes in the wood.  If that is what you have I charge $40-$50 to cut it out. If you have possitive image checkering where the checkering in the wood is pressed in but comsists of grooves crossing each other creating diamonds in the wood, then recutting is more like repointing an costs only about $25 to $30.  The cost differential is dependant on the amount of wear on the pattern.  I've seen checkering where nothing was left but lines on the stock, looked like someone had jsut drawn the pattern on the wood..  That makes it the same as just cutting a new pattern, with the added problem of the pattern already being in the stock..  If the pattern's not too bad I could perhaps help you with your problems..  PM me if you want me to do it for you..
