I am also thinking about getting a custom gun built on the .35 Whelen.
As to rate of twist, I have learned that the 1 in 12 is better for bullets heavier than 225 and up, but also work well with bullets from 200 to 225, whereas heavier bullets may not stabilize as well with the 1 in 14.
Let me put it to you this way, I have a .375 H&H that has a 24" barrel with a 1 in 12 twist (many, if not most, .375s have this rate of twist). As such, I would think that the 1 in 12 for the .35 should be the way to go.
