Hi all,

Looking at building a 35 Whelen or the Ack Imp version but find that there are 2 different twist rates 1:12 and 1:14. Most barrel makers have 1:14 but Douglass lists 1:12. What the difference and why? BTW plan on shooting bullets from 200 to 250 grains. Thanks.

I am also thinking about getting a custom gun built on the .35 Whelen.

As to rate of twist, I have learned that the 1 in 12 is better for bullets heavier than 225 and up, but also work well with bullets from 200 to 225, whereas heavier bullets may not stabilize as well with the 1 in 14.

Let me put it to you this way, I have a .375 H&H that has a 24" barrel with a 1 in 12 twist (many, if not most, .375s have this rate of twist). As such, I would think that the 1 in 12 for the .35 should be the way to go.

Thanks Zachary for the info. It seems that alot of barrel makers use the 1:14 rather than the 1:12. I'm sure I could get 1:12 from most of them if I order it but I was looking a Brownells and Midway as a barrel source and they offer 1:14 in short chambered barrels. Thanks again.

One Dressel's website, legendary custom riflemaker Paul Dressel chose a 1-12" twist for his 358 Norma Mag when he built his own. He wanted to use the 225-250 grain Noslers and decided that was the rate of twist that would work the best. I figure he knows more about that stuff than I, so would take that as a solid recommendation.
