"]Guys,
I've decided that my short-action Win M70 will become a 358Win following a rebarrel. Most Australian makers produce 35 caliber barrels with a 1:16 twist. By my calculations this twist is marginal for the 250gr projectiles. Projectiles I most want to use are the 225gr Partition and 250gr RN Woodleigh for large "elk sized" game. Anyone care to comment on the use of 1:16" barrels in the "slower" 35's? Also why 1:16 seems to be a standard of sorts?"
Given the short M70 action the 250s may eat up too much case capacity and not allow you to drive them fast enough when seated to mag length. Whether the 1-16 twist will stabilize the 250s at the 200-300 fps less than when shot out of a Whelen remains to be seen, probably will though. With a decent length barrel, 22-24", you should get 2250 fps or so out of them. Nothing wrong with 200-225 gr bullets out of the 358 for the size animals you're talking about.
