The latest issue of Handgunner magazine featured an M-1911 pistol chambered for a new .50 cal. cartridge. Anyone heard anything about it or read anything else. Looked pretty cool. The case head was rebated and they were talking a 300 grain bullet at about 800 fps.

Igm: I saw that article and thought that the 1911 going to 50 cal was pretty good. A 300 gn bullet at 800'/sec is gonna 'ouch', no matter what it hits. I would like to see more reports on this cartridge/pistol combo. I sure hope it outlives the last rebated rim cartridge that came out, the 41 Action Express. Mikey.

Call me old fashioned, but if a gun is not a .45, it isn't a 1911. It may be 1911-style, but it is not a 1911.

I feel the same way Paladyn. Especially when smaller calibers are considered. I like the bullseye rule that says you have to use a particular caliber to compete-- a caliber that has enough recoil so that it is a matter of skill to master the recoil as well as mastering the other fundamentals of shooting.

A 50 caliber at 800fps does sound interesting, though. It sounds a lot more sensible than the 50AE as a defensive weapon.

I would agree that I definitely don't want to see guns called 1911 if they are smaller caliber than .45.

I do love my Browning Hi Power however, in 9mm. It's the only 9mm I've ever tried I like.

I don't care what it's called, I'd like to have one! The dang thing is wayyyy overpriced though - if ya asks me. For the same amount of money, I could buy a new "Infinitey" or "STI."

I saw another article about this gun in Petersen's Handgun magazine. The price is $2,895.00 and there is a .45 ACP conversion kit for another $349.95.

It is not a "drop in" for a regular 1911. Apparently it's a top quality piece as well it should be for that price. There is a hot load with a 300 grain FMJ at 850 fps, and a target load with a 300 grain bullet at 725 fps. Interesting concept if you're into punching big holes in things.

Hey Guys,
Just got back from shooting a .50 GI at a local sporting goods shop. All I can say is AWESOME!!!! Shot the factory 300 grain TMJ standard load. Supremely accurate (even with ME shooting) and no more recoil than a .45. Actually, the little woman's .380 has more bite. If it weren't for the $2,600 price tag, I'd have brought it home. I know it might not be practical for the majority of us, but it is a ball to shoot. Maybe Guncrafter is on to something here.

If you want a 50 cal 1911 why not get a LAR Grizzly Mark V in 50 AE and its cheaper then the 50GI.
