My Next Rifle purchase.
« on: June 01, 2004, 02:28:32 AM »
1st: CZ452 Varmint 22lr
Next: Something to shoot cast bullets. I'm thinking of the .38-55 BC, or a .444 Sb2(if i can find one in that caliber)  I really want something I can shoot alot and not harm the firearm. It would also be a hunting rifle for Deer and groundhogs.
If I could find something in the .410 diameter, that would be my preference.
No microgrooves please. Ballard cut would be my choice.
 Any other suggestions?

Some of my favorite groundhog kills have been with my .41mag Ruger Redhawk.
My favorite kill was an off-hand 35 yard shot, that nearly took the head off of the whistlepig.

I don;t think you'll find anything in the Handi line-up with Ballard rifling.  Try looking into a Sharps rifle or Pedersoli repro.  I think that is about the only place you'll find that.  maybe in certain calibers of the Marlin lever rifles.  In fact you might look at this one.

Besides, the lever action might come in handy for a fast follow-up shot in case the whistle pig charges.

Ya know .............................. I've always had this thing where I wanted a good Cannon ( Cannon on wheels ) - maybe I could take the whole den out - LOL. That was a good shot with a 44 - like thay say, dead is dead - no more holes in the field.

I was going to suggest a (stainless steel) Ruger handgun but you've already got one.    So my next suggestion would have been a Savage Striker(if legal in your state for deer), except you said you want a rifle.    My next suggestion, therefore, is a Handi' in .308 that can be loaded with cast and jacketed, depending upon the range to the target.    The Lyman 'M' die allows easy loading of cast bullets, and the .308 is the most accurate Handi', I would expect, in a rifle/deer caliber that is legal in most states.     National Bullet Company in n.e. Ohio sells 165 gr' hardcast bullets for .308 caliber.     I use their 265 gr' hardcast in a .44 mag' with excellent results.

Take care.

Grandpa Mike, that's hilarious!!! :-D  :-D  :-D

Safetysherrif, I just ordered two (actually three) sample packs from National.  Two in .430 cal and one in .458 cal for the 45-70.  The .430's are 265 gr and 300 gr and the .458 is a 405 grain bullet.  I can't wait to try 'em out.  I'm glad to hear a good report from someone else using them.

Wlscott,

My experience with most of the National Bullet stuff has been good.    I have seen some .357 mag' hardcast that I thought needed better molds, but they all shoot well!    The results speak for themselves.

They also make a good-looking 240 gr' JHP that I'd expect to do well at rifle velocities on whitetails out of a .44 mag' Handi'.

Take care.

Those chucks don't look too worried :-D

 That is great!!

.308 is on my wish list but the 30-06 I got last year is kinda filling that spot.
