35 Whelen for wild boar hunting ???
« on: June 01, 2004, 09:48:40 AM »
Remington is making a "limited run" of 35 Whelen's in their model 7600 pump action rifle. It comes with a 22 inch barrel but I think if I get one I will have the barrel shortened to 18 inches. I had a model 7600 carbine in 30-06 once and liked it. How do you think a model 7600 "carbine" in 35 Whelen would do as a wild boar rifle. Especially in the thick stuff? Thanks.

Based on the ballistic tables it looks like a hog killer, I have heard from a gun dealer in the town I used to live in that it kicks like a muther...It may also be the biggest round you can get in a semi or pump.
However I think with all the variety of rounds in 30-06 you can what you are looking for for less and be very happy.

Good luck and have fun!

Chesapeake Troller,

Any chance you still live in the Chesapeake Bay region?  I'm deployed but moving to that general area (Stafford, VA) in August...assuming I get home on time.  What hunting do I have to look forward to?

What type of hunting can you expect in VA

Matt,

I no longer live in that area (North Central Florida now) but still have family that hunts and co-workers who live there. LOTS of deer in the 'burbs and more rural areas, don't know much about the hogs. Deer are a major pest in many areas, my brother lives in a huge subdivison in Olney MD and they have deer in the yard everyday. One of my sale reps live in Lynchburg VA, same story. The areas that are chris-crossed farms and subdivisions have a major problem with deer and if you can get into a situation to hunt one of the smaller farms you should get as many as you want. Bag limits are liberal and seasons from bow to muzzle to shotgun back to muzzle etc are about the whole fall.
Where you are I would definitely get some fishing in on the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay. I used to fish a lot out of Colonial Beach with a good friend and you can a lot run down to Reedville and fish the main bay.

Sounds like you are serving in the armed forces overseas, over in Iraq? If so or wherever you are, thanks for what you are doing for all of us.

New York Hunter,

The .35 Whelen is an excellent cartridge for hunting big wild boar.  If you like the Rem. 7600 then go for it BUT leave the barrel at 22 inches.  Cutting it to 18 inches will mean you will be hunting with ear plugs or ruin your hearing shooting it.  I have bought at least 8 rifles in my time that some shooter had the barrel cut to 18 inches and then didn't like the results so they traded them off.  Four inches less barrel really increases the muzzle blast.  Been there, done that.  Lawdog

lawdog, I had a Remington model 7600 "carbine" with the 18 inch barrel, thats were I got the idea to shorten the barrel on this one. The blast wasn't to bad. At the time I didn't think I needed that rifle so I traded it for something else. I still do need a Model 7600, but I wouldn't mind have one in 35 Whelen. Thanks for the info thou!!!

New York Hunter,

After over 40 of hunting/shooting, 30 years as a LEO I have lost enough of my hearing to chance loosing anymore to over short barrels.  My first experience came at age 16 when a friend took his new .308 Mauser and cut the barrel to 18 inches.  When with him to the local shooting spot(not a range just a dirt bank where everyone went to shoot and sight in their guns) where I was spotting for him sitting to his left and using a pair of 16X binoculars.  His first shot left my ears ringing for the rest of the day even though I had the customary cotton stuffed in my ears(didn't have ear protector or plugs back then and couldn't have afforded them anyway).  If you really want a 18 inch barrel .35 Whelen, go for it.  My only suggestion is make darn sure you get the best ear plugs money can buy to use while hunting.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

I have a very deep interest in the .35 Whelen.  No particular reason why - I just do.

I sure wish that Remington would make it in a BDL SS.  Heck, I might just take it in a regular blued BDL, or even CDL - BUT I don't want a pump.

Even then, keep the barrel at 22 inches.

Zachry........I love the 35 whelen, One of the best all around guns for all size game, But i sure wouldent have one in a trombone action, I hade one of the remington pump cost me one of the biggest elk that ever came out of the Jemez mountians. I knocked the bull down and was going to put another shot in him to hold him until i could get to him and the gun jammed and the bull got up and started to travel down the hill, and another group was coming up the trail and they cut loose and knocked him down and there by reducing it to their possession. Needless to say i would not have another pump hunting rifle, I will not take one in on trade if it costs me a deal or not. BITTER i guess but thats the way it is. Have a good day.
