Stealing worms and crawlers
« on: June 02, 2004, 05:22:50 AM »
Any of you guys ever steal worms and crawlers from robins

I do

After I mow the lawn the birds are right there to pick them up, well they try to. I wait till they get one all the way out and then start walking toward them, they'll drop it most of the time and hop a few yards away. Just go over and pick it up and put it in a can.

If you walk slow they'll stick around and not fly off, you want them to keep working for you so don't scare them.
Sometimes you'll get a few that are ripped in half but thats ok.

Items you'll need; Lawn mower, a little energy, after you've mowed the lawn you'll need a lawn chair, few cold beverages and a can for the crawlers,

A couple of cold barley pops = a couple dozen crawlers :)
Blow a vintage Circe dinner bell and they will come...

Awwww ... what a horrid thing to do! Sheesh. I must confess that I've done it a few time, though. And I always felt a twinge of guilt after doing it.
Birds burn up tremendous amounts of energy. They must eat all the time or their strength fades quickly.
When this was explained to me years ago by an ornithologist, I felt even more guilty.  :(
I just buy my worms, or look for them at night on a freshly watered lawn. I have a rather soft spot for robins, since they are said to be the harbingers of Spring and they're fun to watch. Caught one plucking the freshly-killed Mormon Crickets off the grill of my pickup one day, after I'd returned from a long drive.
He was having a field day! A regular buffet for him. Probably waddled away after the grill was clean ..  :)
