Shooter's Choice and Flitz - Barrels Beaming!
« on: June 02, 2004, 04:41:59 PM »
Ok I am still pretty new to this stuff and have never polished a barrel before. Tonight I loosely followed the procedure of Mitch in MI from the FAQ on this forum and using Flitz in place of JB (couldn't find JB in any shop around) gave the new .223 Bull Barrel and the 25-06 Ultra Barrel a good cleaning. First the .223, with a jag and patch lightly coated with the Flitz I gave it about 35 good full strokes, changed the patch to a clean one with Flitz again about half way through the 35. Started out hard to push through but then with each stroke it became smoother and smoother. Then Shooters Choice on a patch for about 10-12 strokes and then dry patched until the patch came out clean, took about 6 patches.
Next the 25-06, same procedure only using a slotted tip in place of the jag for the Flitz and back to the jag for the Shooters Choice. Used slightly larger patches and switched between cloth and the blue shop towel material. On each one I was careful to pay special attention to get the chamber swabbed out good as to remove any residues of either the Flitz or the Shooter's Choice.
The results are AMAZING! I have never looked down a bore and seen one so shiny as these two are now. I believe if there was a way to do it I could clearly see my reflection in both of them. Next I'll mount scopes and it's off to the range this weekend. I cleaned the Ultra receiver and both barrels (received back from H&R this past Friday) really good this morning with brake cleaner and CLP. I then applied a light coat of Rem oil to the barrels and then also after I finished tonight. I can't wait to see how these shoot now. Will be going to the gun shop tomorrow for bullets, powder, and primers for the 25-06, hope to load up a few rounds before Saturday.
This is a great forum and I have learned SO much from you guys and on all of the H&R/NEF Forums. Thanks so much.  :D

lik2hunt,
I went to T+T Bullets today, they sell powder and bullets and other supplies. They had Flitz products there, so I looked them over after having heard so much about that polish. Well the ones I saw there said they contained no abrasives. What Flitz polish did you use?

The package is predominantly gray with the word Flitz in Gold outlined in blue --- Metal polish, Fiberglass & Paint Restorer above it --- Maximum Strength, Anti-Tarnish, Lasts up to 6 months! Works Fast! under it - Non-Abrasive, Non-Toxic, Non-Flammable, Won't Dry Out, No Residue is written down the side of the box it comes in which is sort a triangle in 3-D with a peg hole at the top. All the same info is on the flip side of the box written in spanish. The amount of the product is 1 oz. or 50g. On the botom of the box by the UPC there are the numbers, CHBX 03511-S. I assume this is the product number. Hope this helps. It's Good Stuff!!!

I must of passed on this many times, thinking the product everyone used contained an abrasive. Thanks for the scope, I won't pass it up next time.

Don -  In my research I found that J-B Bore Paste is abrasive and J-B Bore Bright isn't. Either of these products can be purchased online at Brownell's for sure but just do a Google search and you'll find plenty of places that way. According to someone on this forum (I had a post about it a while back, "JB Bore Paste" I think) the product everyone refers to here is the Bore Bright and not the Paste. The Flitz is comparable since it also is non-abrasive. I don't use or own a credit card or debit card so that's why I just purchased the Flitz locally. Gonna do some shootin' tomorrow and I'll post some results on the polished barrels.

Same here, don't have one, don't want one. There are times when they would come in handy, but I usually just send a check, a wait a bit longer.

I asked my wife today to check and see about getting me one in my name. That's the first time I've wanted one in a couple of years. I had a $500 one a while back, Sept. I think, and all I had to do was call and it would activate it. Well I got my RedHead Bass Pro and Cabela's Hunting catalogs about two days later. They all sat together for about a week of me riding up and down the highways scheming and planning and ....you know. So one day after I came to my senses I just came home from work and walked straight to where they were, took the credit card to the kitchen and cut it up and threw it in the trash along with both catalogs. About 6 weeks later I found the old forum board and "the rest is history" as they say. Got a bunch of H&R/NEF stuff now and paid cash for all of it. Still don't have one though but have found recently that it would really be handy for some of the purchases like ebay, etc. My only problem is my boyish wants overshadow my manly needs sometimes.  :D

Well, you can have your cake and eat it too! Just open a PayPal account, you can transfer funds right from your checking account to PayPal, a lot of ebay sellers take Paypal, works for me.

...if you like doing business with thieves who believe that federal banking laws do not apply to them.
They once stole $100 from my father, by retroactively canceling a guarantee after he applied for a refund. And to think the liars at eBay send out emails warning customers not to do business with honest banks like Western Union.
I don't patronize organized criminals.

Nope, it was just a nonconstructive topic that started to detract from the real topic, so I ended it before it was too late.     Tim
