Finally got some 220 gr Hornadys for my Whisper....
« on: January 10, 2003, 06:44:44 PM »
I have been wanting to try this barrel with heavy subsonic bullets to see if they are stable in my barrel.  Loaded them with 11.7 grs of 1680. This load is supposed to shoot 1000 fps with 200 Matchkings.  At 50 yds, they were all straight and true, no keyholeing at all.  I was pretty happy with that.  Not a bad group either, but I wasnt really testing too much for accuracy load.  But get this....I figured while I had my scale set for that load, I would try the same load and bullet in my 7.62x39, and I brought these along to try also.  I put 2 shots inside a circle the size of a quarter and one on the line with my  unscoped SKS.  I really like my Contenders, but good God man.....an SKS makes an excellent Whisper.  Just thought I would share this experience.  (I'm not sure this is the right place to post this)

Robert,
Are you going to try the 240,s also.  Have you run any test on the penetration of the 220gr.  I am getting a Whisper in the spring and I may be asking you a lot of questions.  I am getting mine from SSK too. The info on the Whisper tell of shooting 240 grain bullets subsonic and they brag on how well penetrates.

The 220's went most of the way through 7 inches of pressure treated wood, but hit a knot and stopped. (Subsonic, about 1000 ft per second) If it hadnt hit the knot, I beleive it would have gone all the way through. There also wa No Expansion at all, but I think I would be better to test them in wet paper.  These 220 Hornadys werent designed for this though.  I was thinking of giving them a little center punch on the nose, just a slight dimple for a hollow point.
My next experiment with the 220's will be with a full case of W296, should give them about 1300 fps.
I also like 90 gr XTP bullets.  They are very flat shooting.
