40 gr V Max Accuracy for 223?
« on: June 04, 2004, 11:31:30 AM »
Loaded up some test rounds for accuracy testing, Win Brass, New/ WSR primers/ Hornady V Max 0.224, 40 gr bullets/ Hogdon BL-C(2) powder.  Load 10 cartridges of each of 27, 27 1/2 and 28 gr of powder.

What do y'all find as your most accurate load with the lighter bullets?  With the 1 in 12 twist I thought I would try something less than 45 grs.
Thanks and Gig''em

The 40 gr V max's are the only thing that will group in my Ultra. I use the moly one's over 26.5 to 27.5 grs. of H335 with a bipod, and usually its under 1" mostly around .5". It takes about 20 to25 rds. to fully coat the barrel and after that, it .5" all the time until you make the mistake of cleaning the barrel. Seems like most of they guy's that have tried the moly's have the same luck as I.If you are in Midland I'll be close to you Mon. I'm going to the Lincoln National Forest for some bike riding for 3 or4 day's.Also check on the deer pop. for bow season.  Digger

Mark, I'm using the 50 grain V Max moly right now with 27.5 grains of Varget.  I am about to start testing BLC2 also.

That load of yours should be one heck of a coyote killer.  Let us know how accurate it is in your gun.

Mark,
My ultra is fairly new so not a lot of rounds throught it yet, but the 40gr V-Max gives me about 3/4" group at 100yds.  Haven't had the opportunity to test it on yotes yet.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!
