Dave:  The November 2003 issue of American Rifleman has an article on the Lott that I found interesting.

10 + years ago I had one built on a P-14 action.  The key word here is KICK.  After playing with it a bit I decided that the chance of running into a irate Bull elephant were slim and were in fact smaller then the chances that shooting that gun a lot would give me a major flinch.  I sold it.  300Win Mag, 35Brown Whelen they don't bother me.  The Lott did.  YMMV.

Doesn't JJHack moderator of the Africa Forum here at Graybeard use a 458 Lott?  Granted it's not in a No.1, but he's probably shot the Lott as much as anyone.

Dave ,
I have a friend that gave me some 458 win ammo because he was going to africa and had a Lott built. This guy is about 350 lbs and shoots 375 and 425's like they were 223's. He shot an elephant with it and then sold it to someone at the Safari Club. He told me that after about 3 or four rounds he was done for the day.

Dave , I shot a #1 458 lot about three weeks ago. I weigh 216 and am 6' 4" tall. It really kicks. I only shot it one time but I would have shot it a couple more times but it wasn't my ammo. I was standing up and that helps a lot. I wouldn't want to shoot it from the bench unless I could set up straight. I really fight back if you lean in to it.

The word "Lott" in the .458 Lott is what is used to describe the recoil of this cartridge "a whole LOTT".
I shoot plenty of heavy recoiling rifles (.458 WM, 375 H&H, HOT loaded 45-70's), and for the Lott, there is NO WAY I would ever touch this one off sitting at the bench. It would bash you so bad you'd never want to shoot it again.
Shoot this one standing up only, please !
Go MAGNUM/MAX LOAD or GO HOME !
Always use MUCH more gun than the minimum required to do the job.
Recoil is your FRIEND...It lets you know you are using something WORTHWHILE !
