I am considering buying a Para LDA for a bedside gun. My question is..... exactly what parts are interchangable with a "normal" 1911 and the new LDA? I'm not in need of opinions about the LDA as my wife will also be using it and she needs something that will point and shoot. In particular, I'm interested in barrels and hammers. Will they interchange?

45LC-Man: Howdy - I don't think any of the para parts are interchangeable with the 1911. I would think certainly not the hammers as the paras are dao pistols and the 1911s are sao and I think the hammers are configured differently. I think, but I can be wrong. And, I'm not certain about the barrels, either. Maybe one of the formun members who have both can clarify this for us. Mikey.

I have a Para C-745 LDA in the carry option (tritrium sights and spurless hammer) I have had it for about 4 months and have a major ongoing problem with it. It refuses to function reliably enough to depend on it. This would not be an issue if it wasnt a $900 gun made for carry. Thats 1.75 times what ive paid for my glocks and at this point i still carry the glocks. yeah, para is lifetime warranty but who wants to send it in every other week? Not that youll have the same problems but beware.

One of the dealers who also shoots Paras said that every Para that he saw was very tight and needed to be shot somewhat to be reliable enough for carry purposes.

45LC-Man - better news yet. Para-Ordnance has just introduced a single stack, single action 1911. Now you can have your 'Para', and not worry about interchageability. HTH. Mikey.

Some of the parts may be interchangeable, but I don't think the majority will interchange. I've seen them, and it's just a different animal. For example, everything from the trigger to the hammer and firing pin is different, the frame is cut different. I think the key to parts interchangeability is to concentrate on 1911-A1s made by major manufacturers. Even then, things like beavertails won't interchange. And you need to be careful about the different locking mechanisms, like finding out whether it's got something like a series-80 safety.

I wouldn't count on it. The best thing to do is contact Para and find out. It's reasonable to expect to replace the barrel if you shoot a lot and you're using jacketed bullets.
