WOW this 17 hornady is great
« on: June 06, 2004, 01:49:10 AM »
:D  :D  :D yesterday, i found a brand new 17 hornady sportsterfor $120, and for some reason i grabbed it. tossed those yucky syn stocks, and put on walnut monti carlos, and put on a bushnell 4-12x50 varmint scope that was on my 243. and off to the pit i went, i had a bad feeling about this, it was a VERY quick buy with no thinking it over, and i was kinda regreting not researching it a little more before i bought it, but after selling four of my guns last week, i was wanting something new, and cheap to shoot. well after i sighted it @ 50yrds, i moved to 150 yrds, and what a sweet shooter!!!!!!! i got 1 inch groups at 150 yards, and from what i have read here they shoot better after they break in??? how much better can it get??? i wish i had found one of these along time ago, and bought it then. and on top of everything good about it at the pit, we hit the woodchuck fields last night about an hour before dark, after making another run for ammo. the first 2 boxes where gone by then       well after 4 woodchucks between the 2 of us. my brother inlaws 22mag does a great job on them whistlepigs too. on the way back to the truck i saw a mid sized coyote chasing mice or something small in the grass on the edge of the field, a little over 100 yrds away. well having many thoughts of only wounding the coyote, i went with my gut, and dropped the 17 on my shooting sticks, and i waited for the coyote to stop moving. then when he did BANG!!!!!!!! and DOWN HE WENT!!!!!!!!!!! i could not beleive it, he justed dropped, after walking over, and cutting him open, i found the inside of the chest was just jelly. of course the bullet did not make it out the otherside, but i think that little bullet made as much of a mess of that chest as my 243 with the nasty little 58gr hornadys do at that range. but the 243 makes a nasty exit hole. if i had not cut this one up like i did to check how good this little thing does, the pelt would have been perfect, all in all this little caliber made me fall in love!!!!!!!!!! now i have only used the hornady ammo, and i love it, but i know there is some other stuff out there too, is it worth trying???????????? or should i just stick with these?? i know that was kinda long winded, SORRY, but i am so shocked, and thrilled with this caliber.

Congrats VC, good shooting, welcome to the .17hmr ranks!!! Although I don't have an NEF  , I do have 3 bolt 17hmrs. they all shoot different ammo best, so if you got a good load out of the box, be happy! The CCI/Speer hollow point TNT bullet in the CCI and Federal is less explosive so if you want better penatration, it is the go to bullet IF it shoots good in your particular rifle. Hornady and CCI will release a new 20gr bullet offering this summer/fall that is designed as a controlled expansion hunting round. Hornady will use the XTP bullet and CCI has one I've not heard of called GamePoint.

Hey Jeff, you'll have to verify with wlscott, but I think the 17 hmr was moved to 100 yards.  Seems fitting given its excessive accuracy properties.

1" at 150 yards is pretty darn good, especially given that the little bullet is much more susceptible to wind drift - thus affecting accuracy when there is a breeze.

This little hornady 17 is just so cool, and the day i got my great groups there was no wind to speak of, but i bet the old wind would mess that little light bullet up pretty good, but either way this little gun is so fun to shoot, and it really drives tacs, what more could a man want??? nothing more on this end         well for a rimfire that is.
