Whitetail Shoulder Mount
« on: June 06, 2004, 12:39:48 PM »
Hey all..

I am looking around right now for taxidermists to do a mount for me next hunting season, and came across a local guy that in my eyes does good work - but I am not experienced in taxidermy what so ever, so I would like your opinion on his work. He is going to charge me 350.00 for the mount.

Here are some whitetail mounts he has done:

Let me know what you guys think.

You might want to keep looking. I did not notice the attention to details that you will find in the work from one of the better taxidermists. For example, you don't see the tear ducts on his mounts. Take a look at a live buck during the rut and these are very prominent, almost like holes under the eyes. Also he has not taken the time to hollow out the nostrils on his mounts or add the details of the neck and shoulder muscles that a live deer will have. It appears that he took the mannequins as they came from the manufacturer and simply glued the hide to them.  For example go to http://www.bbtaxidermy.com/ then go to the gallery pages and go to page 4. The last two pictures in the middle column show a double whitetail buck mount which shows the attention to detail that a good taxidermist will include in his work.  Or you can go to http://www.bullcreektaxidermy.com/ and look at his Games Heads page and look at the photos. It pays to spend a bit more and shop around until you find a taxidermist that does the best possible rendition of the live animal that you can afford. By the way your post does not say what part of the country you are in.

May the wind always blow in your face and the sun always shine over your shoulder. Then your prey will be unable to smell you and unable to see you until after they hear the crack of your shot!
