Jeep Unlimited
« on: June 07, 2004, 03:56:20 AM »
I'm considering one of the new Jeep Unlimiteds that have come out has anyone had any experience with one yet?  They are longer and I was wondering if the handling was about the same as the regular Wrangler.  I have a '97 now and could sure use a little more room to carry "stuff" when I go to the range or hunting.

I bought one about month and a half ago. So far I really like it. I can't compare it to a regular wrangler because I've never owned one. I did trade in a cherokee on it thow. I miss the second set of doors that the cherokee had, but, other than that I like it. It does ride real good and has quite abit of room in the back. I got the hard top, it comes off easy and is not to heavy, my son and I can take it off and put it on. The first tank of gas scared me real bad, 13 mpg, but now that I have a few miles it is getting better, 18 mpg, this is closer to what I got out of my cherokee.

Yeah I know what you mean about mileage.  Jeeps are not known for getting good gas mileage.  With the square shape with flat windshield, etc., they just can't do much in that respect.  But to me they make up for it with the ability to go off road.

I was also curious about the Unlimited...I have owned two Jeeps...The first was an 88 Wrangler with the crap 4.2 litre engine and the second is the one that I still own.  A 1997 Wrangler...I love the Wrangler but with a new baby in the house it is not too condusive to family outings...We use my wife's SUV for just about every family outing.  I could use a little more room to breath and it is tight for hunting even with the back seat removed.  The Unlimited might be the next step for me...I have to see how much the insurance would run on a new one.  I know that my 97 Wrangler is more expensive to insure than the wife's 02 Ford Escape.

Hey guys I don't know how much you are into 4wheeling but wait a year and the Jeep Unlimited is coming out in the Rubicon edition. It will have lower axel and transfer case gears as well as 31inch tires and body armor. I am waiting patiently as I just sold my 84 CJ-7 and miss it terribly.

If you are looking for a hard-core rock-crawling trail rig, then go with the shorter-wheelbase vehicle.

If you spend your off-road time mostly on dirt roads that aren't super-narrow and super-tight, then the Unlimited's longer wheelbase will not hamper you. In fact, the longer wheelbase is mostly an improvement on the Jeep chassis... better ride, better handling, better stability, more cargo room. This is the same wheelbase that the Scrambler was built on, and improves everything about the Jeep performance except turning radius.

If you've got around $35,000 to spend on a vehicle, there's a company in Tennessee that will modify your Jeep to a longer wheelbase and put four doors on it. They often have new rigs sitting around (they buy brand-new vehicles and modify them and sell them) and many Jeep dealers nationwide carry these modified Wranglers and offer a full warranty on them.

I have an '84 CJ-7 and an '04 Dodge Dakota. I may very well be tempted to get rid of the CJ and get one of these Unlimiteds in a few years, especially with the Rubicon package.

Wow, still going nearly a year after the initial question.

he company is AEV and I do believe the've stopped making the "stretch" TJ's.  seems like if you want a long Jeep Wrangler, you're better of to wait for the '07 line.  New design starts then (KJ?)  there's to be no more of the standard short WB Wranglers.  Will be either "Unlimited" size or an even longer 4 door model (KJL?)  Supposedl staying with the basic look and the solid axles  8) .  personally, I passed on a nw Jeep this year so as to wait for the very-likely-to-be-built Gladiator.
