500 yard spotting scope suggestions
« on: June 07, 2004, 06:59:07 AM »
My buddys and I do a lot of 500 yard target shooting and are getting tired of riding the 4-wheeler back and forth to see where the bullets are hitting.  We bought a cheap Bushnell 60X spotter but can't see the 22-250 and 220 Swift holes.  Can anyone suggest a spotter for this distance that is reasonably priced.  thanks

Use a "Shoot-N-See" or shoot closer smaller targets. Or switch to a 50 caliber.

We used some of the 5 1/2" Shoot-N-See stick on's this past weekend and they worked ok.  Put three on the board behind our target but some of the objects we shoot at makes a mess of the things.

I've never looked thru the expensive European scopes so can't comment on them. But the ONLY spotting scope I've ever looked thru that will work at such range is the one I currently own and use. It is a Baush and Lomb Elite 20-60x80mm. It WILL do the job.

A Kowa would get the job done.

Buy the best you can afford.  .22 cal holes at 500yds are going to be hard to see.  ALSO, buy the best tripod you can afford also.  I use a Swarovski STS-80 for distances over 300yd.  I can still see .30 cal holes with my Leupold Wind River 15-45X60 at 500yds but can't see .22 caliber holes.  That's where the STS-80 struts its' stuff.

Another one to consider is the Nikon Sky & Earth 20-60x80.  Very nice scope.  The outfit comes with soft case and tripod.

Checked your site, & am wondering how you would rate the Bushnell Spacemaster line vs the Nikon Sky & Earth line - w/ like features? Also the Sky & Earth 20-60x80 vs similiar models from Kowa?

I currently shoot .308 to 500 meters, & would like to see my groups clearly - w/ out breaking the bank!

Thanks in advance - GCF

My lamps are getting a little dim, so I retired my old friend A 60 mm Redfield of over 25 years. I just ordered a Celestron Ultima 100 ED.
I looked through a lot of scopes on the firing line lately I was leaning toroth the KOWA until I looked through this model.
Now I don't know if you can see a .22 caliber hole @ 600 yds in the black,I don't think so.

gfc

I just placed the order for the 100 mm scope. When I get it I will give you a evaluation on it. It has the extra low dispersion glass which provides excellent color correction and sharp images, and it has fully coated optics. The scope I looked through was the best I ever looked through other then the Nicon 20x120  binoculars but those cost $10,000 +. gcf I got it from Adorama.
