New NEF owner - some questions..:?: :?:
« on: June 07, 2004, 11:38:05 AM »
I have been following this forum for awhile and until now never had much to say, but learned a lot from reading.

About 20 yrs ago I acquired a 158 Topper 30/30 and 20 ga. I bought it because I wanted a 20 ga to hunt grouse... but once I fired the 30/30 and saw how accurate it was, it became my favored woods walkin' rifle.

About 10 yrs ago I stumbled across a .357mag satin (nickel plated) H&R and when I found out how accurate it was... IT became my favored woods walkin' rifle. I had moved from Whitetail country to coastal Blacktail country and shot my first Blacktail with that .357 in 1997.

Both these guns were disposed of after a divorce and I haven't had much disposable income until a trickle began in the last few months...

So, to cut to the chase - Gun show over the weekend and I acquired a 22 Hornet w/synth youth stock. Also picked up an adult synth stock. Made two misconceptions about this whole deal.

- first misconception: I started out looking for a rifle for my 10 yr old son, and when first looking at this rifle I thought it was a rimfire. When I went back to initiate the trade, the guy told me it was a Hornet   - I put a concerned look on my face and said "Oh well, I guess it will have to do.." I thought I was gonna get a pretty fair deal on a rimfire, so when I walked off with an SB2 receiver and a Hornet, my face muscles got tired from smiling!  :-D

- second misconception: the adult stock I found at another table turns out to be a shotgun stock. I guess it is okay.. but...

I like the results of the first misconception, the second is just okay.

Now for the questions:

I would like feedback from y'all about sending off to NEF to get a another barrel? How long is the turnaround time - in other words how long will it be before I get my gun back? I am looking at getting a 30/30 and possibly a 45/70 barrel.

Any one have feedback/comments/info about alternative places to get replacement barrels? I have seen website: http://www.martscustoms.com/nef.htm and wonder if anyone has done business with them, and any comments...

Also any comments about anything related to my situation: I recall reading something about a rubber washer under the forearm,

Anyone want to trade a synth adult shotgun stock for a rifle stock?

And this - sort of OT - I acquired a Snake Charmer (not the NEF version) without a buttstock. I have modified a Rem 870 stock to fit, making an 18.25" barreled.410 shotgun out of it. I have been wondering if I could make anything else out of this? Some kind of pistol cartridge gun? Put a sleeve in it to shoot maybe .32 H&R Mag, or .38/357.. any thoughts?

Thanks in advance guys... this new toy is gonna be fun!

Cheers
Kerry

Congrats on your new rifle. Turn around time from following the posts over some time is anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months. My own experience was the 2 month range. But I got 4 barrels fitted and one of them was out of stock. You will be very Happy. It is worth the wait.

This Hornet barrel is drilled and tapped for open sights but they did not come with the gun. Anybody have sights they are willing to part with?

And thanks fuzzy :agree: and rmtaylor for your comments. :agree:

I sent them an email inquiry 2 weeks ago, still haven't heard from them.

Sometimes it's hit or miss getting emails answered.

Welcome to the board tallyho.  (By the way, that's my favorite coyote call too  )

The turn around time is usually 4-6 weeks depending on the time of  year.  I just had a 45-70 barrel installed on my Ultra frame.  It took exactly four weeks from the time I sent it to the time I had it back in my greedy little hands.

You can buy open sights for your Hornet through H&R.  I'm sure you've already seen this, but I'll post the web page for H&R anyway.  It's [/url]www.hr1871.com and they should have everything there that you will need for the barrel accessory program as well as the open sights.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of H&R/NEF rifles.
