Cast Bullet Load Data
« on: June 07, 2004, 03:50:19 PM »
I was debating weather or not to put this post in the Handloading section, but I decided to put it here because of it's specialized nature.

I am about to start loading some cast boolits for my 44MAG SRH, and my 45-70 H&R single shot rifle.

My Hornady book (which is kind of old I'll admit) doesn't really have much data for cast bullets, nor does my Nosler book.

The boolits I'm using are from National Bullet Co and are:
44 MAG- 265 grain RNFP
44 MAG- 300 grain FP
and;
45-70- 405 grain FP

Anyone have any good data for these particular boolits?

Any info would be appreciated.  Even if it's just to point me in the right direction on the net.
Thanks.

I can tell already, you're going to want a Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook!!!!   :-D   May as well get it now!!   I'll look up the loads in question tonight if you don't have the answers already.

Thanks for the replies.  I did get some info off of handloads.com, but any more would be appreciated.

Butler, is that Lyman book mostly data, or is it mostly a "how to" on casting your own?

I'm considering casting my own, but I am going to try a few out first before I jump in with both feet.

Worked late last night, I will get you the information.
The Lyman manual, first half casting and cast bullet information with a little history and a few articles thrown in, last half is load data,  appended with balistics tables  also has ballistic coef.s for the bullets. Good manual even if you don't plan on casting;

Lee's Modern Reloading, 2nd ed. has a great deal of cast bullet data using the newer powders that the Cast Bullet handbook does not cover. You will save yourself a great deal of frustration with the bullets which you mention if you do not try to push them faster than about 1200 fps to start with. Plain base bullets simply do not lend themselves to high velocity (Pressure?).

With that 405 grainer in the .45-70, 12.5 grains of Unique should give as good accracy as you are likely to get and is easy on the shoulder.

This site is an essential read for what you are trying to do.

Mr. Ford, I have 50 44 MAG cases ready to go.  If it's not too much trouble, could you post data for the 265 grain RNFP and the 300 grain FP .429 bullet?

Which powder do you suggest for each?  I'm thinking W296 for the 300 grainer and H110 for the 265 grainer.

I did get some data off of handloads.com, but they're mostly recipies that people use in their guns.  They don't have a starting load/max load listed.

I'm ordering my Lyman cast handbook, but until I get it, any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
