mag primers vs standard primers
« on: June 08, 2004, 05:25:52 AM »
hi guys
my question is this. in the modern reloading manual by richard lee, it states that the 300 mag uses a large rifle primer.  does this mean a standard large primer or can i use a large primer for magnum loads? also does it matter if i use win or  another type of primer?
thanks
travis

There are precautions to take with primers, some carts it don't matter if you use either large rifle or large rifle mag, but some are particular, due to the way the powder needs to be burnt, changes pressures at times as well, your best bet is follow the powder manual, when the manual states large rifle, it means only large rifle primer, unless indicated that you should use a mag primers, many times edging to the max or compressed load the book will indicate to use mag primers, using the mag primers help burn the powder completely. Some reloaders step up to mag primers using curtain carts, due to the climates they hunt, generally cold weather climates. they do this for better ignition. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

I like to see a specific primer named in the load data I use.  It clears up any ambiguities about what's required.

If you buy a Speer or Hornady reloading manual, they specify the primers for each load. Speer uses a * to denote magnum primers, Hornady spells it out by brand and type. Speer loads all use CCI primers because they make them. Hornady uses a variety of brands.

It's always a good idea to follow the recipe in the manual. There is always a reason for using the recommended primer.

22savage:  If the load calls out for a large magnum primer thats what I would use, you might check around a little more b-4 going to a standard rifle primer you may not get as hot a flame as needed for complete powder ignition, theirs a reason for them to specify the magnum primers in the load data. :D    JIM

On the topic of primers would there be an advantage in using magnum primers in a reduced load. I was thinking since the powder is in an unknown/ predictable position in relation to the ignition source. The hotter magnum primer could give a more consistent ignition.

I usually use magnum primers with slower-burning spherical or ball powders. Most manuals advise the types of powder requiring magnum primers. Some manufacturers advise their primers are suitable for both magnum and regular loads. Winchester is an example. However, I use CCI or Federal magnum primers anyway.
