best powders for .357 max 10 inch barrel
« on: January 11, 2003, 05:02:27 AM »
I am struggling with this .357 max 10 inch barrel , with 2400 it was hard to keep the holes on the paper . I changed to AA1680 and things improved greatly but I dont think it is up to the potential of the barrel ,my shooting partner belives I am sprayin unburnt powder and the muzzle blast is fierce  .I was thinking of trying 296 next .I have been shooting 170 and 180 grain bullets using a mild crimp.
Any thoughts ??
Thanks

Smokin,
You will get greater FPS with W H110.  I ask a similar question on this forum a while back and I was told to try IMR 4227.  I have never gone back to the H110.  Much better groups although you will lose some FPS I think.

I have used IMR 4227 for years with 180 gr. XTP's.  I have also heard that the 296 is good but have never tried it since mine shoots so good with 4227.  I think you are right though, the 296 is a little faster but all the deer I have shot with mine never complained about the speed.

Don't think you will get away from the horrendous muzzle blast with a ten inch pipe. A 14 inch barrel makes a pussycat out of this round though and it is much more enjoyable to shoot. :D

Don't agree with you hankbrass.  The muzzleblast is not bad at all from a 10" barrel using IMR 4227.  It is one gun that does not bother my ears at all when hunting without earplugs.  I would venture to say that it would be a lot louder with Win 296 for some reason.  My 41 Mag and 44 Mag sound totally different (lot louder and more percussion) when using 296 over 4227.  I assume this comes from the higher velocity.

I got good advice from this forum when I was working up loads for my 10" Armour Alloy 357 Max.  I have two very accurate loads, both use the hornady 180 XTP.  One is with IMR4227 and one uses 296.  I settled on the 296 load as MV is much better.   I use small rifle benchrest primers.

BTW 296 and H110 are equivalent powders

I just came in from sighting in my 14" max for next weeks pig hunt. I use 20.5 grains of Imr 4227 and the 180 grain Hornady sspb. I've used H-110 and it does have a higher velocity but I've found my accuracy loads with the Imr 4227. My .02 8)
