Reamer question
« on: June 12, 2004, 12:27:35 PM »
Guys,
I'm not mechanically minded so excuse me if this is a really dumb question. Some chambering reamers I believe have removable pilots (or is it a floating pilot), is that true? If so, can a .416 pilot be added to a 338WM reamer to create a 416 Taylor reamer?
Thanks for any help...

The removable pilots for reamers are for chambering barrel blanks with minor (a couple thousandth's) off from non-standard bore diameters.  They allow for more precise, concentric chambers, especially in match quality guns.

Your idea of using a .416 pilot on the .338 Winchester Magnum reamer would not work because the the neck of the chamber would stll require a separate operation to .416 T neck dimensions  It would be best (and easiest) to rent or buy the proper reamer.
