Heck, I'm 48, and money is tight for me! :)  The best advise I was ever given, was to get the best scope you can afford. I think either of your choices would work well for you. Most of the time, the rifles and scopes are better than the guy holding them, so practice with that rifle all you can. I saw that you were interested in reloading. It's a great extention of your shooting pleasure. You'll remember the first deer you take with a bullet you loaded. Have fun with it, and keep safe!

Even though money is tight with you...as what was said to you before....get the best you can afford when it comes to optics...go over to Walley World and take a look at the Leupold Rifleman series of scopes...for about $200 you can have a 3x9 and it is a great scope for the money...a-lot of people don't like the friction adjustment type scopes...but I have 2 of them and they have never  moved off zero for me...I know it seems like a-lot of money for one when comparing it to some bargin basement scopes...but the last thing you want is for your scope to fail when you need it the most...and with a Leupold that gennerally doesn't happen.  Don't get me wrong Bushnell makes some fine scopes..I know I've owned a few...along with quiet a few others as well....if the Leupold is too far out of your price range...check around on the Web for a Simmons Whitetail Expidition...it can be had for around $119-$135 and it is a great scope for the money too.....

Good Luck

I've tried more scopes than I care to count and for the money Swift gets my vote.  They are clear, reliable and come with a lifetime warranty.  As far as price they are right there with your bushnells.  I really like the 4-12x40 premier (currently $120 at http://www.eabco.com/swiftinstrument.htm ).  The standard model swift scopes are good and are usually priced from $90-150, the Premier series are a little more $$ but have some additional features that are worth every penny (like additional lense coating and a stronger body).

The model number is 676M which is waterproof Matte....the photo they have shown is the silver but the model number is correct...

I just received a new S&W 3x9x42 with Rainguard from ultout.com on clearance for $88 plus shipping.  Natchezss sells them for $250 It's built like a tank and is a bit on the heavy.  I compared it to my Elite 3200 and it was just as bright however the Elite had a slight edge on seeing fine detail. All the S&W scopes are on clearance you might check them out.

Might want to consider a Nikon Prostaff.  I have one on a .22 and it is well worth the $150.00.   Bright and clear!  The Nikon Lifetime Warranty is a plus also.

I have several scopes - I like my Leupold best - but have a Bushnell on my 220 Swift that is excellent. On my H&R 22 Hornet I have a Simmons Whitetail Classic. I picked it up used for about $70 and it's been a superb scope!

Don't discount a used scope - most shops check them out pretty well and if it's a reputable shop will warranty it for a short period of time. At least long enough to ensure it works correctly.

You can also check the precision of the scope by putting it in a clamped space and getting it pointed at a spot. Then dial the windage right about 40 clicks, then down about 40, then left about 40, and then up 40. It should be on the spot you started at. If not - it's probably junk.

Nice to see a young person shooting and looking for things to make it more enjoyable!!

I have the bushnell dusk to dawn 3-9x50mm and don't like it.  It's heavy, long, narrow field of view, and not as bright as it should be, probably because of it's length (same tube as the 6-18x50mm).  I pulled it and put on a 3-9x40 bushnell banner (should be a bit cheaper) and it has alot more field of view, mounts much better, and is alot lighter.

I've owned multiple 3-9x50mm scopes, long and short, all heavier than the 40mm brothers, and none of them are currently mounted on anything, they're just backup scopes.  All of my 3-9x scopes that are mounted are 40mm.  Of them I have to say the 3-9x40mm bushnell elite 3200 is the best.  It's brighter than any 50mm scope I've owned, it's has incredible clarity.  My bushnell banner 3-9x40mm is very usible, and is all you need for hunting, but the nicer higher quality optic scopes really spoil you!

I recently mounted a Bushnel 3x9 on a NEF Handyrifle in .17 HMR. It works great so far, and it only cost me $85 new.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

WOW good info all of 'ya :-D  :-D  :-D i looked at the simmons whitetail classcic and liked it but it is 109.99$$ in the cabelas catlog. i am probly getting the bushnell 3-9x40 ledgend it is 104.00 WHOLESALE :-D so it retails for 207.00 which means its can be had from cabelas for 150.00+-. 150.00 is TO much for to pay. i think i'll get the bushnell and pay about as much as the simmons full price and get a better scope for the same price. BUT i will take a LOOOOOONG look at the simmons whittail classic. it looks VERY nice. the bushnell looks nice too.............????. once again what do y'all think. THANK YOU VERY MUCH :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D

I'm another vote for the Swift Pemier. They have an adjustable objective which is important for those of us who must do most of our shooting on short ranges. They are lesser known than the competitive brands, but I believe they put their money into their scopes rather than into advertising. You gotta remember that you are the one who winds up paying for all those full page ads and glowing reviews in the gun mags.

Here's a shorter link to the same place http://www.digitalfotoclub.com/sc/product-features.asp?id=964590785

Deadeye,
I think thats the longest link I ever saw.  I've ordered Swift scopes from Digital Foto as well but I've had some problems with them so I don't recommend them anymore.  The last time I ordered from them they shipped the wrong scope.  I ordered a 6-18x40 premier they shipped a discontinued standard grade 6-18x40.  Then they told me I could exchange it but I'd have to pay shipping to return the scope they originally shipped, plus they had a policy about a 10% restocking fee.  I'm still trying to get that mess straightened out.  They do ship fast I'll give them credit for that.

Oneshot, if you paid by credit card, stop payment. That gets folks real reasonable real fast. If you paid by mail, explain it real simple. "Either you make it right, or I file mail fraud charges with the state AG and the postal inspectors."
