Recoil in Encore 15" pistols?
« on: June 14, 2004, 04:45:09 AM »
I normally post on the TC rifle forum but have recently become interested in getting a pistol barrel for my Encore in either .308, 7-08 or .270.  Is the recoil in these guns fairly violent?  Thanks for the help.

I have a 22-250 a 30-06 and a 7mmBR in 15 inch Encore barrels. I would rather shoot the 30-06 in my Encore pistol than an Encore Rifle. To me the recoil is more manageable in the pistol. The 22-250 and the 7mmBR recoil is is not a factor at all. I think you will be surprised how little the recoil is, in the calibers you mentioned.

Paul,

I shoot the 15" in 30/06 and the recoil is very managable.  Just hand on and enjoy the ride, don't try to fight it.  It's a very enjoyable shoot especially with those new T/C Encore rubber grips.

Someone once said that the .308 Win. in an Encore pistol is a lot like a hot .44 mag out of a revolver.  They were right whoever they were.  While the bite is a good one its not out of this world.  I was scared shooting mine for the first time.  Now that I've shot it awhile I can tolerate about 20 to 25 rounds per sitting.  After that accuracy tends to fall off as my palm and web of my shooting hand gets sore.

I'd go for it if I were you.  I did.

Sweet looking rig.  I just ordered a rifle barrel in .25-06 so I may have to wait and let the fat man bring the pistol barrel at CHRISTmas time.  The .308 is at the top of my list for sure.  Already have brass, dies and bullets.

cknight98,

Come to think of it I think it was you that I first heard say that the .308 was much like a hot .44 Mag.

The 708 is a pussycat! I think the blast (depending on powder) is worse than the recoil.

Now the 454 with a 405g bullet is a different story.......:)

Wouldn't the blast be reduced with the short action calibers due to more effecient powder burning in the shorter barrels?  This is why I was thinking about a .308 or 7-08.

I have a 270 in the Encore and do not regret the purchase, it was to replace and  lighten the weight of my rifle for sheep hunts. I too thought that recoil would be a problem, not at all. I enjoy and am amazed how accurate this caliber is and would never think of a pistol shooting 300 yards and weigh in with scope at 5 lbs. No problem with recoil.

I PURCHASED A 7-08 15 INCH THIS SPRING AND REALLY LOVE IT.  ALTHOUGH I HAVENT HAD A CHANCE TO SHOOT IT VERY MUCH,  I DONT THINK THE RECOIL IS THAT BAD.  I HAVE IT TOPPED OFF WITH A 3-12X40 BURRIS SCOPE.  IT IS A NICE RIG.

About the muzzle blast, for an example if I load my 708 with 115g Speer TNT's with Varget they shoot with very little blast (more of a pop) and there is visibly no flash. If I use Sierra 100g HP with the same basic load it has a very large ball-o-fire and booms enough to make you think it's a magnum. Just depends on the combo and I've tried quite a few adjustments to remedy it. My hunting load with 140g NBT and N550 powder will give a pretty good roar but it's still quite comfortable.

if the 308 is very managable as every one says in an encore
would it be about the same in a different kinds of fram thats a pistol ie a xp or lone eagle if the barrel was the same length an the guns weighed about the same?

slavage,

Then you have to take into account the grip location, grip angle, and the height that the barrel rests above the grip.  These are all variables that translate into perceived recoil.
