There's a guy at the range who just paid about $250 for a set of custom dies to make a 22 caliber cartridge based on the 30 carbine case. Performance is supposed to be similar to a 22 hornet,  maybe better. Why would anyone want to do this?

What is wrong with spending your hard earned money as you see fit, if he get pleasure out of creating a different caliber for his needs or desire its up to him as long as he doesnt break the law or want to barrow the money from me. :D    JIM

I'm trying to find out why people do this.  Is there a sub-hobby within shooting that draws people to experimenting with esoteric cartridges?  It seems like a retro thing to do now that most niches have been filled at least three times over with modern commercial cartridges.  Can anyone shed some light on the attraction to this game?  It does seem pointless to me, but there must be some satisfaction in it.

The disease is called "wildcatting" We have a forum just for those folks. Check it out and maybe ask the question again there. You might get a better answer from those folks who suffer from the malady.

Some folks just gotta have a cartridge they designed.

Guess you'll have to ask Diane Fienstein (D-CA) that. When she heard that taxpayers were going to get a $200 tax rebate her response was "I'd hate to see them spend it on a second VCR".

It's called "pushing the envelope" in the areonautics field, and many of us do it in one way or another.  Our loads, our driving, our relationships, or our hobbies are all common areas where some people push the envelope.  I especially don't recommend it in relationships!
