I killed three deer last year.  The farthest was just under 100 yards and the closest was about 40.

Killed a 130 class buck at 30 feet the evening before Thanksgiving with a 357 max.  Standing on the ground I almost had to push the doe out of the way so I could get the shot.  Then couldn't see any thing but hair in the 4x Leupold at that distance.  Just goes to show you that a buck in LUV is easy.

A spike horn in Connecticut at about 80 yards with a 30-06 and a doe at about 50 yards in Maine. The ranges in New England do not get much further than that. I will say that the 80 yard shot is the longest I have taken so far. Most of the deer I shot would average out to about 30 yards or so.

It was my first deer, a button buck at around 15 yards.  I was in a tree stand and he was feeding along the edge of the powerlines.  12ga slug, and another 20 or so yards and I had me some good venison   .

Of the 4 deer I took last year they were shot at the following ranges;

1.]  3x4 Mule Deer - 141 yards

2.]  4x4 Blacktail Deer - 285 yards

3.]  4x4 Mule Deer - 235 yards

4.]  4x4 Mule Deer - 293 yards

All yardage is by my range finder.  First two were taken in California and the last two in Nevada.  Small groups and tight lines to all.  Lawdog :D

Ill make my confession now.

My first deer was a "wing shot" at a running doe from 30 yards, 12 gauge 00 Buckshot.

Most of my deer have been shot at about 45-50 yards.

I have never shot over 75 yards at one ever.

Of course I live and hunt in the cedar swamp and pine plantation, so ranges are allways short.

The deer I shot last season was 150 yds out. I took it with a standing free hand shot, no rest, with a 7 mm rem mag.

Doghunter, I kinda snorted when I read your post but did a little research and found that at 300 yds. your 85 gr. bullet had over 1100 ft/lb of energy, plenty for a cues deer.

At the local gun show, I got my hands on a Winchester Coyote in 270 WSM caliber.  I put my best Leupold 3x9 scope on it.  I tried the 150 grain power point bullets finding that 5 would go sub 1" at 100 yds.  I was ready for that long shot.  If it was anywhere out to 400 yards, I was gonna get it.

Shot my deer at 20 paces with that rifle.

My preferred hunting method is still hunting.  I never sit in trees and almost never stump sit.  My lifetime average range for making kills on whitetails is probably about 40 yds.

Last year, my last deer was shot at the longest range I've ever taken an animal.  I'd estimate it at 175 yds.  The one I got 3 days earlier was at about 6 feet.

130 yards standing broadside on a 16-point 175 gross B&C non-typical whitetail after passing up 3 running shots seconds earlier all at about the same range. Nailed him with a 130 grain Rem core-lokt from my .270.

My last deer was shot at about 45 yards. I was walking down a logging road with my nine year old daughter and she said "dad there's a deer". He was standing broadside right in front of us! I raised my rifle, she plugged her ears and I shot it. He ran about another 45 Yards. I shot him with my Winchester model 88, 308 Win. It has a Tasco pronhorn 3x9-40 scope. I was using Remington 150 gr. Core Lokt pointed soft point's. It left about a baseball size exit wound! :-)

No snorting please! I killed my first Coues deer last year at 400 yards. A nice 80" 3x3. Model 70 Win 30-06 with 150 grain Sierra Gameking on top of IMR 4895. The shot was taken off a bipod. Mike
