Please feel free to set me straight...

I have a 10" 223 contender barrel that is giving me fits.  I had it recrowned over the weekend and headed back to the range.

Using a IMR 4198 and 50 grain nosler BT I shot a group 1.5" group at 50 yards.  I backed up to 100 yards and the group stretches to 4-5".  I'm using a cheap NcStar 2.5x scope so maybe it is just me that can't consistently aim right at the farther distance.

I find it difficult to believe that this bullet is not stabalizing when it works well with so many of your guns.  Maybe if I had a higher power scope I would find that it is me.

Your thoughts?  Think it is me or some variable I am not considering?  Don't worry about offending me...

I have a 10" 300 Whisper that normally shoots 1.5" five shot groups at 100 yds.  Accuracy then fell off to 2.5" or worse.  Found that the scope base was loose, screws were too long.

doubling the distance often results in triple the group size especially if you are only shooting 3 shot groups at the close distance.  If you are shooting 10 shots into 1.5 at 50 then you will most likely be able to shot 5 into 3 inches at 100.  Another issue is the size of the crosshairs, thick ones can make a precise aiming spot more difficult to achieve.

The nc star wont even make a good tent stake , I tried one and shot the insides out with a rimfire .
I think the 10 inch is to short for .223
Are you driving the bullets fast enough to stabilize ?? My super 14 will shoot sub moa 5 shot groups when I can hold steady using 748 or blc-2 and v-max bullets.
I would try another scope and the 50 grain v-max driven pretty fast , be ready for the muzzle blast from the short tube .

Even if the scope is good, with a 2.5X scope, I have a hard time shooting my best groups at 100 yards with anything less than 4x.  As for NC star scopes, I have two, one 4x on a 35 rem barrel that works just fine and the other is a 2x7 on a 22 K-hornet and it also works real well.  Guess I've been lucky, but I didn't buy either, traded into them both as package deals.

I agree with Graycg...that 2.5x scope is awfully hard to get great detail at 100 yards.  I tried to shoot groups with a 2x Bushnell and my .375 Win and had a hard time getting good groups.  My problem...too little magnification.  Groups will be good enough to hit a deer with at 100, but poor to shoot for the pupose of getting good groups.  The nice thing about the low magnification, however, is what I call its "ease of steadiness" at normal ranges with a 14" barrel.  As far as the NC Star goes, I have no experience with them.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)
