Scoping a 10/22 standard model what is good?
« on: June 15, 2004, 08:41:47 AM »
Wanting to keep the cost under $100 (under $80 would be even better   )  Is a straight 4x better or should I be looking at the 3x9's for value per dollar spent?  Looking for a new scope not used.

Hi Thanks for the info.  I ahve noticed a lot more offerings of the 3x9's than the straight 4x scopes on some of the mfgs. web sites.  I know on a .22 the scope won't get a lot of stress from recoil    Clear optics and repeatable elevation is the most important thing to me.  I would probably go with a weaver type mount too.

An excellent scope for the money (around $50) is the 3x9x40 Bushnell Sportsman (Sportview).  Also a 3x9x32 for about $35.
They have 1/4" fingertip windage and elevation adjustments, and a fast focus eyepiece feature.
The Bushnell Banner's are made in
3x9x40 (about $60) and a 3x9x50 (About $95).
I'm sure there are other opinions, but these scopes have worked well for me on various 10/22's.
Another Bushnell is the Trophy 3x9x40, and for money spent, it is my favorite for the 10/22.  They run about $80-$85.

I just clicked the banner on the top of Graybeards page and it took me to the Bushnell site.  I notice that the .22 scopes come with rings and the others do not.  I know you don't get somethin for nothin so are these scopes of lesser quality?  Or are they just downsized because they don't need to handle as much recoil?

thanks again for the info.

Looks like from $50 to $100 there are a lot of options.   :D

I would recommend you NOT getting one of the 22 scopes.
A full size scope with a 1" tube works much better.
All the ones I mentioned are 1" scopes.
You will have to get a base other than the one that Ruger supplys with the 10/22, as they are for the 3/4" 22 scopes.

Go back to the SWFA site at the top of the page, scroll down below the 22 scopes and you'll see the Sportview's and Trophy's.
Look at those different models.  Maybe there's something there you will like.
As I said, there are a lot of good scopes out there, I only know these Bushnell's have worked well for me.  I'm sure you couldn't go wrong with a Weaver if that's your preference.

Go to Wal-Mart and look at the Bushnell scopes.  They work good on the 10-22.  I have a 4-12 on one of mine.  Had to use tall rings, works good though.

I need to stick with the 3-9's and the smaller lenses for a new Silhouette game that is getting started with a bargain rifle category with scopes that cost less than the rifles they are on.  Bushnell makes several that fit the bill and I will be testing several for the new game.  Thanks  :D

I put a Bushnell sprotview on my daughters 10/22, and it works so well that I put the same scope on my Marlin 883 22 Mag. It is inexpensive, and an excellent scope.

Thanks Daddywpb  :D

I am going to try both the sportsman 3x9 and the inexpensive .22 3x9 models.  The goal is to see how they work for a new silhouette shooting game where we use standard rilfes and scopes instead of expensive target rifles and the $1000 scopes to create a fun and affordable shooting sport.  The current games are fun but we believe the high cost of equipment is keeping many people from joining in.  Silhouette is sort of a formalized plinking game and with larger targets it is a blast with a 10/22 or a Marlin 60 or other entry level gun.  Teh nice thing is that these guns have sold in the millions so there are a lot of people that already own the equipment they need.  This really keeps the cost down!  Your daughter will love it too as we plan on having a very active Jr. Division!

I wish we had matches like that around here. Sounds like fun. The equipment race is what caused me to quit shooting IPSC matches.

Me too!  When you needed 4 or 5 magazines to get thru a stage it was too much to deal with.  The IPSC racers lead to the formation of the IDPA.

Actually the simple games can do very well once a group realizes that the racers will screw up any and all recreational activities they come in contact with (winning is the only thing to these fellows regardless of the cost or final outcome).  Our new Silhouette lite game will not have a racer category, instead we will point them to the existing silhouette association that already have lots of racer categories for them now.

Lots of 10/22 shooters and Marlin etc. will love the game and shoot it as long as they do not have to go head to head with a specialized target gun from anschutz or the like.  A fun family oriented game is almost gauranteed to be a sucess but getting the groundwork laid so that the racers don't take it over and screw it up is a time consuming thing.

HI Daddywpb

The basic format has been set.  You can read about it in the Handgun Silhouette section if you would like.  (It is in handgun silhouette cause there is going to be a handgun side to the game as well, the idea is to bias the game more towards recreational fun for the shooters that find the standard shooting competitions a bit over the top of what they are interested in)
