wire vs. wood

what is better to use wire or wooden fur forms?

Trace,the use of wood or wire stretchers and which is best,has been ongoing for decades.At this time the fur industry prefers that most furs be put up on wood.The main exception would be muskrat,in this case both wire and wood is still used.
 Just because wood is preferred,doesn't mean you can't use wire.Some fur handlers,use wire because drying time is faster.Also the storage of some wire stretchers is easier ,because they can be hung up out of the way.
 You will have to decide for yourself,which works best for you.Like most things in the trapping industry,there is not a wrong or right answer.Also ,every trapper has their own ideas as to what is right for them.

Tom has it right on the money.  I really like wood for my rats and coon have for the most part been put up on wire.  Same goes for my fox and coyotes.  

Now I have learned many new things on handling fur in the past few months that I will be trying.  Must are saying to use wood and a few of the furbuyers perfer wood also.

So just pick which is easier for you and go with it.

I was always under the assumption that wire was the preferred choice for rats by the bigger auction houses like Nafa.

I use wire for rats and wood for everything else.

Tick,you are absolutely right.The preferred method for rat put up,is still on wire.
 Some trappers still use wire for all the fur they put up.Those that are good at putting up fur,regardless of stretcher material--receive top dollar for their fur.I have seen coon put up on wire,that would end up top of the heap in anyones book.
 The moral to this story is--use what you like,but do a good job.

What Bog mentioned is the way to go :  Use what you have till you can  change over to what you prefer and so called  what fur industry wants.... Alot of it alludes to what the buyers want to see and also what puts the skin in the best perspective to the buyer.
