how do i clean a rifle???

i am getting a .280 handi :-D rifle and don't knoe how to clean it :oops:  :oops:  :oops: . i have cleaned about 3000 shotguns but never a rifle. i am looking at the one piece cleaning rod in cadelas [don't  know what page its on.] it has a thing on it that looks like a up-side-down cone on the rod i guiess it fits in side the bore to keep the rod stright?.can i use
Hoppes no. 9 powder solvent oor will this not remove the bullet fouling it the barrel. please give me help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH

Cleaning rifles and shotguns are basically the same.  If possible, ALWAYS clean from the chamber end so that you protect the muzzle from wear and tear.  Now, your choice of a one piece rod is good and it sounds like you are describing the muzzle guard (upside down cone sliding on the rod).  It will help keep the rod centered from hitting the sides of the bore.  Another thing to consider is a good chamber guide if you are cleaning a bolt-action, or another approach is to go with the Otis Flex System that uses a cable wrapped in plastic and you PULL it through from chamber to muzzle.  This takes a little longer to use, but insures that you are not damaging or wearing out the bore.  The whole kit fits in your pocket and will handle .17cal. all the way out to 10gauge bores.

If you plan on shooting the same Brand bullet in your rifle, cleaning is a snap. Many folks recommend breaking in the barrel by; Cleaning before the barrel is ever shot, with a good solvent, and starting with a green barrel. The NEF needs to be broken down and cleaned from all the crap that seems to be on them from the factory, around the hinge pin. Follow cleaning instruction on your Cleaning kit. I would say clean from the breech when ever possible. Shoot 5 rounds clean the bore, shoot 5 more clean the bore, repeat this for 1 full box of ammo. When the first box is gone, clean it one more time, always cleaning from the breech end. The next box you shoot should be the same brand, and the barrel sould be conditioned for that particular jacketed bullet. Cleaning now only need to be done if accuracy is not good. NEF rifles are somewhat finicky but seem to perform well if you don't jump around with ammo brands. Hopefully you can find a brand that shoots well from the start. I highly recommend the winchester silvertips, and the Remington SP core-loks.
 Cleaning is an easy job with a Bore-snake. (Sold at most gun shops)

My dad pounded into my head the need to clean a gun every time you shoot it.  Pull out the 22 and shoot that one pesky Starling (Ha, as if there was ever just one) messin with the Martins and you follow by pulling out the cleaning kit and putting a couple solvent patches thru the bore.  He grew up in a time of corrosive primers and such.  Today's ammo is much different.  I have gotten away from cleaning everytime I shoot but I do clean more often than some and I wipe the outside down with and oil or silicone rag everytime I put them away.  I won't want any rusty fingerprints appearing in my absence.

I neglected to mention that most of the firearms  manuals  have cleaning instructions as well.
 Oh yea, Dewey rods are great. Only use a brush when a patch won't do the job. :grin:
