Fur trapping, I really look forward to my beaver trip each year, then coons, then coyotes.

Most challenging to date has been WOLF. Though I have had a few Mink give me a run for my money.

Marten and Beaver are about the most FUN for me. I especially LOVE the smell of Beaver (I know what you are thinking). Don't know why, I just always liked it.

Scott, where do you trap? Northwest florida doesnt have much for wolves ,let alone allow the trapping of them.
We in Minnesota have the largest wolf population in the united states--after Alaska--they are considered the golden calf and we can not touch them.I doubt that we ever will be able to.
Give us a little more insight into your trapping experiences.
 Thanks, tom

Bogmaster,

No problem. I live in Florida now, but I moved here from Alaska in late 2000. I spent 5 years in Ketchikan Alaska, that is where I did all of my trapping. I usually ran a trap line of about 80 traps for Marten, mostly box sets with 110's, and some #1 jumps for pole sets. Also some beach sets with some 1 1/2's for Mink.  I also ran about a 18 or so 330's for Beaver and maybe 2 dozen snares for wolf. The island I was on was THICK with wolves, but that certainly didn't make them easy.

Since moving to Florida in 2000, I have barely trapped a lick. You can only use snares here and to be frank it really doesn't interest me to do it to much around here. I have helped 1 guy get rid of some beavers, but that is about it.

I truly miss my trapping days in Alaska. I recall setting out at midnight of the 1st day of the season to start setting traps. The lump in your throat when walking to some snares in the dark, and then seeing fresh wolf tracks in the snow heading down the same trail, and the anticipation of a wolf being in one of your snares.

I still have a good percentage of my traps, and I should be back to Alaska in a couple of more years.

I mostly trap racoon and some canines. When sign warrants it, I will set a mink set or two. The ocassional muskrat in an edge set (pocket or cubby at the waterline) Rarely target the muskrats and beaver, but plan on trapping some ponds i know for beaver this year, sign says there are several so ill take a couple.
