More good advertising....
« on: June 16, 2004, 04:22:26 PM »
Got  the new Hornady catalogue on Saturday and finally got to browse through it. On page 30 is a picture of a fellow with his lioness and what is obviously an NEF Ultra propped on her side. He says that he shot the lioness with his NEF in 450 Marlin at 25 yards      First shot was a chest shot followed by 2 more. A good shooter and handy (no pun  intended) with his arm as well. On the back cover is a fellow with a very nice buck with his muzzleloader rested in the rack. It is either an NEF or that Brazilian wannabe, my knowledge of the appearance of the NEF Muzzleloader forearm is not good enough to say one way or the other. In either case, these pic's, especially the very obvious Ultra on the lioness, make a strong statement about the capabilities of these simple break open singleshots.

It's good to see these rifles get the recognition they deserve. I don't know that a single shot would be my first choice for dangerous game, but it's good to know it can be used that way.

With some practice you can surprise yourself at how quickly you can poke those rounds in the chamber, cock, aim and fire a NEF. I've gotten pretty quick with the 357. Corse with a lion comin at ya and the recoil of the 450 it might be a little different. Corse with a lion coming at ya at 25 yards ...the 450 prolly doesn't even recoil at all.....

That guy must walk bowlegged  :)  to have what it takes to GET WITHIN 25yds of a lion and SHOOT it with a singleshot.  No doubts about the capabilities of the chambered rounds, but I'd like to at least have a decent chance for a fast follow up shot.

Wonder if it was tied up somewhere?

As for loading speed, I have always prided myself on the speed I can load a single shot shotgun.  I hunted with one growing up, and was able to get off 3 shots as fast as my brother could with his pump.  At the range Wednesday, I had my son give me a 30 second timer jsut using my wrist watch while I shot my NEF .17HMR at a 70 yard target.  I managed 10 shots in 30 seconds and held to about a 2 inch group.  Actually saved a digital pic of the group somewhere, but I am at work now.  That little .17 is really starting to like the Federal V-shock ammo after about 500 rounds of various brands.  Some reason, the Hornady that shot well to start out is not grouping worth a darn now...

Bowlegged INDEED!  :)  There was a video on another forum awhile back of a "canned" hunt in an enclosed area. There were about 4 people in the scene one  spectator and three others with bolt guns. The "hunter  " walked up on a big Male lion and shot him at about 50 yards or so. The lion charged and there were several other shots.. the lion was on the guy is seconds! It was incredible how fast that lion got to him!!    Knocked him to the ground (no doubt soiled himself before he hit the ground too!) and turned around to have himself a snack. The other two started firing at close range..as the lion ran back past them they all had emptied their guns and the original guy got off two more shots....they then all reloaded and walked up on the wounded lion and shot him from a distance several more times. :(  They all then gave each other high fives... :x  Whoope do! They were darned lucky (?) the lion was the only one that got shot in that deal!!  :(

Make mine the lever action Marlin 450 for this type of shooting. Whether I hit that lion at 25 yards or not, my Fruit of the Looms would need changin'.

Just got back from my sons wedding in Calif, where I met his father-in-law who has gone to Africa hunting for the last 5 years. When I walked in his den I saw a stuffed lion in the sitting position , the top of the head came to my arm pits (I am 6' 0" tall).  He used a British double rifle in 415 cal.. He said that the lion charged at him from the brush at 25 yards. The first shot got him in the shoulder (at 25 yards), and the second shot was in the chest at 5 YARDS. I think I will stick to Whitetailed Deer

I got the opportunity to stand in a pen with those big lions before at a friends house, and their ain't no way I'd shoot one with anything less than a 50bmg @500 yards!!!!!!!!  Those cats are just HUGE, and I'm not getting that close to anything that can EAT me for a snack in the wild just to shoot it.

Yea, but the BIG difference is that paper target isn't gonna get pissed and try to eat you after the first shot.  With 400lbs of pissed off lion is charging you, it'd be REAL easy to screw up.  No thanks.  Not this hombre.
