For that Smith, consider 9.5gr of new Unique max.  Old Unique could go to 10gr.  Do not even think about the Ruger/Contender loads for this piece.  Even a steady diet of the above loads will begin to shake her apart over time.  About 8.5gr Unique for an everyday field load is plenty.  Inside 50-60 yards, your 9.5gr load will take care of everything this side of elk or griz. Enjoy.

Also, save those magnum primers for the maggie loads with 110/296.  They are not desireable for loads with 2400, Unique or anything faster, causing erratic pressure and velocity readings.  Standard LP are just fine.

Blackhawk, If I stay with the 8.5 grains of unique with my 25-8 will that serve as a hunting load also?  I wanted to get around 900 Fps.
Some people come into our lives and quickly go.  Some stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts.  And we are never.  Ever the same.   Authur unknown.  In memory of my son Jonathan.

I used your load of 9.0gr Unique with the hard cast 265gr LBT-wfn bullet in the intrest of stopping the bullet for inspecton via a 5gal bucket of dirt.
No Such Luck. At 25 then 35yds the bullets blasted on through violently spraying dirt out the backside. The Plastic bucket was done for after these two shots.

My Hornady manual list a SAFE 1,000fps load using 20.4gr 296 and their 250gr jacketed. The test firearm was a Colt Buntline special w/4.5" barrel. I tryed some of these in my Ruger. Were healthy and shot well on the metal plates at 45yds. Kind of reminded me of the Win Factory loads.

Am also using Bluedot and am happy with it. This Sierra load is a step across the boundary & meant for the Ruger & T/C though.
