pepper spray for bears

Where I hunt small game, it is illeagle to carry centerfire guns. The bear population is increasing.
Does anyone know what the most popular pepper spray is for bears, brand, size etc?.
And most important, does it work?.

In my opinion the only reason you would get pepper spray for bears is to spray it in your own face. That way when the bear sees this writhing, screaming form on the ground it might just die of laughter. Just my 2 cents.

In other words you can not carry concealed for self defense even, thats weird, well I guess in a hunting situation, would be prefacing of the evidence :(
Maybe strap on a few bells, so if there is a bear close bye he will hear you and most likely run off. Surprising a bear is what causing them to be aggressive and take the attack mode to defend there territory and themselfs. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't.  Just ask that 14 year old boy that was attacked in Alaska a few months back.  They emptied 2 cans of bear pepper spray into that sows face at a distance of 20(+/-) feet and only a flare gun ran her off.  There are other incidents where it has failed.  Also, If I can't take a suitable weapon with me to defend my life or the lives of my loved ones then I don't need to be going there.  I don’t care how great of a small game hunting grounds it is.  Also interpret this however you want but I have a saying that hangs on the wall behind my desk.  It reads “I Would Rather Be Judged By Twelve Than Carried By Six”.  Lawdog

ice, tyoe  udap in your search window, read the first couple that come up. Like the others I'am not real keen on carrying bear spray, but this one seems a tinny bit better than the others. Like Lawdog said ifin I cant carry the needed firepower in the woods to protectmind and then me, I "Aint" gonna be there.

Some days it works, some days it don't.  I think it's still better than nothing but remember, it is a CLOSE RANGE item.  IMO 20 ft is really pushing the effective range, regardless of what it says on the can.

The hunting location i`m speaking of is the Cherokee National Forest. When small game season is in, hunters cannot legally have center fire guns in their possession.
This area is very convient for me without having to travel long distances to hunt.
The area where I hunt is adjacent to a bear preserve and the bears roam all over the area. They don`t bother reading the signs.
I know that 95% of the time a bear will avoid people. It is the other 5% that i`m concerned about.
I think this bull crap about laying face down and covering the back of your neck is rediculess.
I think it is bad that a person cannot defend themselves.
I`m just trying to figure out something short of breaking the law.

ps: I`ve heard that some guides carry short axes or long hatchets sharpened razor sharp in bear country at times when they cannot carry a gun.
Has anyone ever heard of this?.

To sum it all up an expert was once asked what the difference between Black Bear droppings and Grizzly droppings. He stated that blacr bear droppings where mostly grains, grasses, honey and small rodent bones. While grizzly droppings smelled strongly of pepper spray and contained little bells and whistles!

All kidding aside, The Alaska F&WS carries pepper spray but backs it up with a slug loaded 870 12 ga. I've read reports that claimed the pepper spray was more successful than a handgun at stopping a bear attacks. But I'll not be experimenting with my rump roast anytime soon thank you. I always thought that stuff was put out by that "EXPERT" on Discovery that had half of his face chewed off and said it was his fault WELL DUH!! yeah it was your fault you D***A** you didn't shoot the critter first.

Seems to me a 12 ga carried with some 3 inch mag slugs would do the trick if needed. Are shotguns not allowed for small game hunting???

ice,

The following is from an article about bear attacks and the database they are keeping on such attacks.

Quote
Remember, the vast majority of brown bear attacks are defensive_the bear will nip, bite and swat for a bit and then move on. If the attack is prolonged, going on for minutes, perhaps then it is time to fight back.  Black bears are a different subject.  "The majority of black bear attacks appear to be predatory," says noted U.S. Geological Survey research biologist Tom Smith.  "With black bears you should always fight back."

If a Black Bear attacks it is almost certain that you are going to be his guest for dinner.

Got a question.  Could your re-print the ordnance code about not being able to carry a “centerfire rifle” while hunting small game.  It is not that I don’t believe you I just wonder about carrying a centerfire handgun is legal or not while hunting small game.  While I don’t advocate the use of a handgun for protection from bears it would be better than depending on your fists or “Bowie Knife”.  Just wondering if there is a loop hole in that law.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

From my experience?  It works great, But! you have to hit them directly in the face.  Near misses don't count.  As for that 14 year old, I understand it was dark, he was excited, and I seriously doubt he hit the face.  I've seen the wild life agent at an Alaskian Air Force Base, trap bears in housing, (both Grizzlies and Blacks) take them out behind the base.  Give them a liberal dose of pepperspray in the face, then turn them loose.  Since he started using pepperspray he has not had a return bear.  We had a problem at the cabin with a Grizzly, I set a can of pepperspray to spray at waist height when the door was pushed open.  A weight was fixed to keep the door closed, and to re-close the door if it was pushed open.  When I next went out a  blast had been sprayed, and there was Grizzly tracks at the door.  I could see where it had turned and ran.  We have not had a bear problem since.  When floating rivers, when we set up camp at night, we hang a small can of pepperspray across any trails that enter the camp site from the woods.  Occasionally, during the night we will hear a startled grunt, and spraying.  We will check it out and will find a can on the ground with a tooth puncture in it.  It will usually still be spraying when we find it, and we usually throw a tarp over it to keep the spray from getting too strong in camp for the rest of the night.  Sometimes we have to relocate camp due to the spray and wind.  But after a bear bites one of those little cans, it doesn't come back.  If you want an experts opinion, talk to Joe Nava, Joe teaches "Bear Protection" classes in Fairbanks.  State employees going into the bush are required to take these classes.  Yes Joe teaches the use of a 12ga and slugs, or a large caliber pistol.  But he also swears by pepperspray, and teaches it's use in class.  I have taken his classes and that's where I got the idea of putting small cans out around camp at night.  Joe advised doing this, and I can testify that it works.  When camping above tree line, I always do the cooking about 100yards from camp.  Since there is no trees to hang the food boxes from, we repack them and set them back on the 4-wheelers.  I place a small can of pepperspray on top of the food box.  In the last four years, I've had two cans bitten into.  The food boxes were not opened.  In fact we watched one medium sized Grizzly come down off the hill one evening after sundown, but before it got dark.  This Bear went straight to the cooking site, sniffed around where we had sat and eaten.  Then it went over to the 4-wheeler and reached up on the food box for the loose can.  After getting the can on the ground we heard a loud squall, and the bear left in a big hurry.  We could see the can spinning around and spraying everything in the area.  Next morning we had to put on gloves and take the food box and my 4-wheeler to the lake and wash off the pepper.  If you get the residue on your hands, and then make a pit stop, rub your eye, pick a berry with your hands and eat it, or pick your nose, you're going to be one "Hurting Jose".    Believe me I know from experience!

You want to see how a Black Bear reacts when sprayed with pepperspray?  Watch Wayne Carlton's video  "Call'n Bears".  The last scene on the video, he calls in a big cinnamon bear to within a few feet.  He then sprays it with pepperspray and the bear leaves fast.  Personally I think Wayne Carlton has a death wish.  No way I'm going to intenationally call one in that close without a gun.  And I'd be shooting long before it got that close.

Bear being sprayed on surprise coming into a bait site is much different than a bear on attack or in defensive mode, I guess the pepper spray is better than nothing, a friend of mine up north had three big males in his back yard fighting over territory or the bird feeders LOL. He said the sounds that came out of those bears fighting stood the hair on the back of his head;) They fought for about ten minuets, he said it was like hours, he wishes he filmed it but he was so captivated watching them through the window. This was in Conway NH, there is a good healthy black bear population in Conway. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

Actually the boy didn’t have the pepper spray, he had an air horn that he grabbed after the attack started and that is what woke up the counselors that did have the pepper spray.  These adult men emptied two cans of bear pepper spray square in the face at a distance of twenty feet or less and it didn’t stop the sow’s attack.  The air horns didn’t stop her either.  Only the use of a flare gun is what stopped the attack and made the sow leave.  If there had been a loaded rifle or even a shotgun with slugs the boy could have been saved some injury.  At the distance that bear pepper spray is effective, if a bear is in full charge you better pray that the spray does work because you will not have time to grab anything else to protect yourself before the bear is on you.  At least with a rifle you don’t have to wait until the bear is almost on top of you.  If a bear is running at me(what I would consider to be in full charge which is not hard to recognize) I have every intention of shooting long before he is within spray range.  Lawdog

Ice,
I usually use a .22 when I squirrel hunt.  But when I hunt in the CNF I use a shotgun.  I believe the hogs are meaner than the bears.
Best,
