Millet Rings and Base Matchup!
« on: June 17, 2004, 04:22:19 PM »
Hey guys I have been lurking in here for quite a while. I used to have a handi rifle in synthetic in .223 that I set up and shot for a couple years until one of my buds talked me out of it. I regretted parting with that rifle the same day I let it go. It shot super with the remmington factory ammo from the first day I shot it. I once shot a 2 inch group with it at 200 yds. Only thing I didnt like about it was the trigger pull. I would just about give out of air before it went off.

Anyhows, I got to wanted another one so I looked around on the internet awhile and I stopped at a few shops looking. I looked at the standard handi and the synthetic. I also looked at a Rossi bull barrel. All were in .223.

I didnt see anything that tripped my trigger so I finally thought about what I would use it for and looked at all the options available and settled on the ultra varmit in .223 with the 24 in bull barrel. It should be here the middle of next week.

Anyhows Im trying to get the stuff together to put it together. Im planning on mounting a Leopold varix III 3.5X10X50 Illum Reticle on it that I had on another rifle I havent shot this year.

My question is I have a set of Millet High Angle Lock Rings I have been using with this Leopold. Will this type of ring fit the mounts that come on the Ultra Varmit Rifle? They are weaver style rings with windage adjustment. Or should I get some other type of ring setup.

I want to have the stuff ready to mount when the rifle gets here.

By the way Im going to be using the rifle for general varmint hunting groundhogs, crows, fox and coyote. I also love to spend time picking off squirels on the ground with head shots ridge to ridge in the wide open woods we have here in Virginia.

Im going to start off shooting the winchester white box and then turn to handloading when I get a supply of cases.

Any info about the accuracy potential of the ultra varmit or the scope mounting question would be appreciated.

Thanks marv I just matched the rings up with a weaver base I have on a knight disk rifle and it fit. Im just assuming that it will fit. Thanks for the quick reply. I will let you know how it works out. Im going to shot the rifle as soon as I get it set up. However, im anticipating having to do a trigger job to be satisfied but I will just have to wait and see when the rifle gets here. iisabigone

I use Millet mediums on my 223 Ultra, the high should work fine.

Do a search on scope mounts - there's quite a few good ideas posted in previous threads ...

At a minimum, make sure to dismount the scope rail, clean the tapped holes, and remount with a medium grade threadlocking compound.  I did manage to shoot my scope loose the first trip to the range .

iisabigone;
Welcome aboard!!
I use the millet angle-lock rings on both my handi (30-06) and huntsman barrels they are the best rings i have found so far.
you might want to loosen the windage adjustment screws on both rings and bore site for windage.....then fine tune with the scope adjustments.

I have never seen it happen but it may be possible to bind the scope tube by adjusting one with the other tight.

Let us know how she shoots.

iisabigone, I use the high Millet Angle Loc's on my .223 Handi w/bull barrel. I have a 6.5-20x50 Simmons Whitetail Classic and the fit is about as perfect as can be. The big 50mm objective just misses the barrel so is as close as possible to the line of sight considering the lens size. The rings work great and are a perfect match with the scope and mount....One thing that you lucked out on is you will get the 6" long "Ultra" rail which gives you a bit more latitude in mounting positions. Try to get the rings as far apart as possible and be sure to secure the extra front stabilizing screw in the ultra mount so it touches the barrel firmly but does not bend the scope rail upward. Also secure the side lock screws on the front stabilizing screw. If this does not sound understandable to you now, wait until you get the Ultra and closely examine the scope rail. You will then descern what I am saying...Good Luck, you have the perfect parts to make it work....<><....
