44-40 Info
« on: June 18, 2004, 06:51:02 AM »
I am looking for information about the old 44-40 cartrige.

All I know about it is that (apparently) it was a .429 cal bullet with a charge of 40 grains of BP behind it.

Is it safe to use modern smokless powder to reload for this cartrige now?

What do the ballistics look like for this round?  Somewhere below the 44 Special I would think.

No, standard bullet diameter is .427, cast .428, some jacketed .425.  Yes you can use smokeless.  No, it is not "below" the 44 Special.  Check here to get started-http://www.sixguns.com/tests/tt4440.htm.   All the bullet and powder companies have fresh data available for this great round.
